Owen, You are in Tannum, go talk to the Tannum nursery for trees. They stock some starter figs, have a couple of nice root over rocks, and have a pretty good bunch of trees ready to be tortured  .
I bought my willow leaf fig from Tunnum so they do get them in occasionally.

john,

i do beleive you are correct in going through private sales and the clubs, i must say though it is possible to get good stock from nurseries albeit sometimes (mostly) overpriced for what they are.

i think if more care was taken in the stock that is getting sold the price wouldnt be so intimidating especially to new to bonsai people. i have started learning that to get good trees you have to pay for the quality, you cant expect to pay $10 bucks for something that will be good in a few years without some form of growing on and fixing of things or choping for taper etc.

They used to import a pretty good selection of Bonsai Pots as well - and very reasonably priced.
