where do you get your stock ???

Post by littlefig »

Hi,
I went to the red dragon bonsai farm today and while they had some very nice raw stock i still found it to be a little out of my price range.
I would like to aquire myself a couple of willow leaf figs and maybe a couple of qld small leaf figs but dont know where else to look for them other than a bonsai nursery.
Do you guys know of anywhere i would find these trees.

Cheers
Owen

I hate to say it, but one of my first plants was a willow leaf in a nice pot which I got from Bunnings and which originally came from Bonsai Environment in Sydney. I think it was around $25.

Just took this pic on my desk so it's not the best. The label dates it at 2005.

Going to keep a close eye on it as we go into Autumn/Winter here:

ron, depending on what you want from that tree i would wire it up now before it gets to heavy to move, if you want movement, i would also consider putting it in a grow box for two years or so to get it going, you could still go back into that size pot eventually but you will probably have different ideas in two years aswell :D

Hi Owen
Propagating would be your best bet. I was lucky enough to get a 2m high Benjamin fig and a 1.5m QSL in big pots from a job. They actually wanted me to dump them :o I regulary take air layers from the Benjamin and have just started on the QSL. If you don't come across anything buy some that you can layer off to create more trees. I bought a 3 tree group of Benjamin figs from Bonsai Place for $28 in a styro box and will get about 10 small trees from them for a forest tray I want to do.

Regan, tannum sands isent to far off rockhampton. about 1.5hrs if i remember. You might try to get in touch with the bonsai club up there as a couple of them have willow leafs they may sell or propagate for you. I was treasurer untill a few weeks ago when i moved to victoria and had a few i sold off.

Ron, willow leafs can be touchy in a cold climate especially if you live in frost areas, mine will be going into my hothouse for a 6month B&B soon i think :D My boug also will join them

You just reminded me, Noah, that I have to get out and assemble my Bunnings mini-hothouses this weekend. Although high 20s temps are forecast today and tomorrow, the weather bureau says this'll probably be the last hot weekend until Spring.

I guess I should put my small 'smartypants' boug I got a couple of weeks ago in the 'B&B' too.
