hey ozzy, the roots were reasonably well radiated around the tree & fairly even, i cut the tap root off & shortened up the others to fit this pot & tied it in securely so it wouldn't move. soaked it in a vitamin b solution for 2 days prior to potting. i admit i was a bit apprehensive as to whether it was going to survive, but once it shot it never looked back.
hey alpine art, this tree was not animal pruned, it was bloody huge, i cut the main trunk ( 6" ) out of the centre. this tree was about 3 metres wide, & 4 metres high. nobody should be disqualified because they found a really nicely ramified tree, thats part of the hunt, looking for the pot of gold @ the end of the rainbow. put your tree back in dude, i reckon its a real gem.

I like the type of trees you choose to dig Alpine. Always a little bit different to the normal. They will make challenging bonsai one day!

thats an interesting piece of material you've got there, i can see a couple of trees in it. i will follow the progression with interest as i'd like to see what you do with it. i like "different" material, it makes us work outside the square. cheers, miyagi.

Thats alright Bretts i can see the trees , got the counter moving too .I finally got some movement out of the 2 Hawthorns that went dormant for 2 and 3 years .I cut the windswept one a bit too savage but its bursting now .Cheers

I have learnt a little trick ,submerge the bugger in water for a week then drain and submerge the pot for a few days .Its how i got these 2 to react , i noticed 1 still has bugger all roots yet survived the heat wave last year . 2 years without any roots to nourish the plant one would expect it to go wheels up .Like i said they go into self preservation mode until a flood or cover up of the plant takes place then they burst .DROWN THE BUGGER YOU WONT KILL IT .Cheers

hey tom ya know how it is? ya always want what ya haven't got... RMJ'S, CALI JUNI'S, TAXUS BACCATA, LIVE OAK, PONDEROSA., and it goes on.

glad you like it tachigi, and us aussies have got some great material down here, we just haven't been able to show the rest of the world till now. remember, australia was only taken over by europeans a little over 200 years ago, so anything non native hasn't had much of a chance to take hold & get to any size. watch for a future thread on this tree, the tools are about to come out. cheers, miyagi.
