How about a Hawthoff Antonio

Post by Bretts »

It is amazing that 2 years ago I thought that we had nothing to collect around here. I have since found that many invasive species are hiding among our natives.
This year I am leaving the nectarines alone and think hawthorn will be a good subject(tongue in cheek) Side note; do nectarine back bud?
Any way since Your Hawthorn was #1(insinuating more?) I could not resist a challenge :D
This is the first two of the season :D
I was cautious and have given an inch or three for surface root formation.

Here is a bit of a laugh for you while you wait.
This is one of my first trees from a Ray $8 starter. When I posted on the IBC all I wanted to know was whether I could thicken lower branches to overtake the top ones.
All I got was a discussion about sticking it back in the ground.
I finally relented stuck it in the ground a year later with no root work as no one explained that to me.
Here we are today almost 4 years later. Either hawthorn grow real slow or it disliked the conditions some how.
I thought it was time to pull it out of the ground and see if I could do better from a pot. It always seemed healthy enough and although penjing like, the roots where healthy.
I will play around with this for a while before I decide whether to fix the root base or stick with a penjing style base.
For some reason I am thinking I can get better growth with my collected ones.

ok, i've loaded the guns, now i'm just trying to lay 'em on the table. there are 3 trees with 2 photos of each. i'll have to load each tree with a separate post, i somehow need to adjust the camera in future for pixel size, but this will have to do for now. sorry for the inconvenience, i'll get better at it as i go. this tree was dug 12 months ago. cheers, dave.

rightio, tree number 3. this was dug 4 years ago & is a really crazy tree. it has taken a while to come up with a design for this one, in the meantime, i've kept it cut back hard, dave.
