I have no idea about gardenia's so here is a good way to find things out.

Reasonably slow growers, Back bud from old wood, Repot and prune after flowering, ( or before if you do not like the flowers). will take wire well, but do not let it cut in as the bark is easy to scar

I treat them the same as Azaleas as I have 2 mini prostrate forms

I will repot in a couple of days as flowering will slow growth and I want it to grow FAST, no, DAMN FAST.
