Olive

Post by Andew09 »

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to bonsai and extremely new to growing olives. I picked this one up a month or so ago and have been trawling this forum for ideas and progression for it. After all that i'm still a little lost as to how i should treat it and train it. Below are some images which show it from all sides and the top. It's got a great base to work from and what i understand a new strong leader which has grown from it.

If you could give me your :2c: on it i'd really appreciate it because the more i look at it, the more i want to develop it.

I'm thinking of getting it into a larger growing box to really get it going. When is a good time to do this? I've been giving it a bit of seasol when watering and havent let it have too much but the soil has always had been left to almost dry before watering again.

Cheers,

Andy

hey mate good start...i like olives because for the not to "knowledgible ppls" like ourselves they are very forgiving...i have quite a few in variest shapes and stages...
i would put it in a foam box and put it in the sun (altho we are coming into the slow period for growth) every bit will help..let it grow for a while (may take a year or so part of the bonsai thing im affraid...) and you will start to get branches appearing all over the trunk and then work out from these what you want to do with it...olives are great for carving so there is another option for the design in the future...
Good luck... :tu:

Would it be safe to get it into a larger box this weekend?

Thanks Gents!!! Very much appreciated...

One last question... What would be the best to grow it in other than a well draining soil with some organic mulch?

I have all my olives in Diatomite /Zeolite mix, None of them are particularly big or well developed, but they sure do grow well in it :-)
