Seiju elm stock trees

Hi all,

Today I dropped by for my weekly bonsai fix at Bonsai South and they have a stack of seiju elm stock plants. They've been controlled growing in the ground for around 12 years. Great trunk structure and lots of branches to work with!

Before and after pics below.

Early days so i'll post more pics as it develops.

How much did you pay for those?
How much are they to non students?

These aren't reserved for students. Public stock for everyone. They are $500 ea.

I did see them out there today. Couldn't really afford the quality

The one Leong was working on (or finished when i saw) looked pretty sweet too.

but, ok, i say that, however, as i get older, you know, i agree with that, more money is worth more with a quality tree... soooooooo........ i guess, i am changing....

nice tree.

umm, still not at the stage for me to spend that money.

Not true, Ben. It's a matter of attitude and age. At age 18-20 or so the thought of having $500 to blow on a stock tree is unthinkable.

Well I already have one $500 tree from Derek, a few $500 tree's from Leigh, and a few hundred to Ash to pay for first...
I wont ever $500...

I came across these trees on my recent walkabout and they are worth every cent.
I saw some there for AI think $350. Since they were over three times the size of my one I paid $95 for it was pretty well what I guessed.
I also saw some great trunks at another southern nursery about the same price. They were sweet. This quality is were it is at.

Hi Guys,
without getting into the value of those particular trees, maybe you should do your budgeting in a different manner.
When I look at a lot of the postings on this site, the photos are of trees where the original material cost $50 or less and the finished tree really does reflect that.
Maybe rather than purchasing ten $50 trees over a 12-18month period and ending up with ten average bonsai, by purchasing something without obvious fault in the nebari and trunkline for $300-$500 you will end up with something special.
Surely it would be expected that anyone in a hobby such as ours, would be spending $10 per week on that hobby.
Ultimately not only will the quality of your collection improve, but the overall standard of bonsai in Australia, will rise from the perception of creating bonsai out of "commercial" grade material or that you have to grow it from seed.

Well I'm not sure about ouch! Dave but where were you 20 years ago when I was wasting those $20 and $30 on average stock. I'm posative that I have wasted many thousands of dollars and have little to show for it. I think that your message is excellent but will the peolpe listen? that's another story.

Its not really the cost for me, its the distance.

500kms from Morayfield, 5 million kms from sydney.

I paid 480 twenty years ago for my first tree, a yamadori fig. I play with cheapies but you really do need a GOOD tree to balance our little whoopsies.
