Re: A day with Grant Bowie
Those of you who missed Saturday with Grant, missed a great day. The morning session which, I thought was a beginners' basic turned out to be nothing but. It was really going back to basics - the growing medium. Grant showed us quite a few samples of inert media he experimented with to find a suitable growing medium for all the trees in the National Collection. He then discussed the results (which were surprising) and showed a few examples. It was very interesting and informative. I bet you can guess what we were all doing with our trees yesterday.
The afternoon session started with a little bending of a Scots pine. I keep having to look at the photos to believe it. Grant then uprooted a fig he'd potted in the medium he'd settled on to grow the trees, for about six months. There was plenty of new root growth to be seen. A little more discussion and then onto Banksia (no "s" for the plural). Well Grant gave us so much information, I wish I'd had a recorder. I missed some trying to write it all down and I ran out of photo space with the Scots pine. Banksia and other natives will happily take full-strength fertilizer not specifically for natives. You will need to acclimatise them to it first. Banksia will also grow from cuttings.
When I have time, I'll write it up and post it here with photos.
I forgot to mention lunch (how was that possible?). Just the smell of fresh bread rolls with real butter was enough to send the taste buds working not to mention the salad/coleslaw and variety of cold meats and the fruit platter and cheeses. Morning and afternoon tea came with home-made cakes and biscuits which were quickly snapped up.
And now it's time to say good-by to all our.............. Penny.

Re: A day with Grant Bowie
As you can see it was a bit of a Mickey Mouse demo but I enjoyed myself. I hope everyone else did as well.

Re: A day with Grant Bowie
Shrek seems to have enjoyed it as all of us attending. I haven't had time yet to write about the events or post corresponding photos. But i will get a round tuit.
I have written an interview with Grant though, and it has been approved. It will be in the next Newcastle newsletter and maybe Central Coast's too. I will post it here too.
Penny.
