Freebies
On Saturday just gone. A friend of mine gave these trees to me saying I want the pots back.
I thought about it for oh!! two seconds and said yes. Although I know where I live it is going to be a challenge because trident maples like it colder than we get in winter.
So I will have to resort to the man made inducement of cold water as in fridge and putting the trees in the garage to shorten the days.
I have done this in the past with Palmatum and have got good winter colour. These are my first Trident's and yes they were imported from Japan last year.

That's good starter stock, who brings them over?
Be interested on how you form a crown, will you go the rounded top or more triangle?

Young and hostile but not stupid.

Re: Freebies
Great little trees Pup. Pity about the winter care
I would be very eager to get general info on how these were imported.
Although they are great it seems like alot of trouble for such small trees?

Re: Freebies
I am not sure what is involved as I have never been in a position to do it. I do believe that when these were imported there were other trees with them and larger.soltan wrote:Great little trees Pup. Pity about the winter care![]()

Mainely Satsuki Azaleas my mate decided to get these for me although I did not know at the time. If you get in touch with the Quarantine department in your State. I think they will give you the relevant information.
Length of time depends on species. Also all have to be BARE ROOTED. So be aware I am also led to believe that all conifers have to be held for two years. None of the Ulmus or Malus or Prunus families. Are allowed to be imported.
If you do decide to check it out ask about those as different States may have different regulations.
I hope this is of some help

I will see how they develop then I will study the Kokufu books I have at my disposal.
At the moment it is let them be until August. Just feed and water. Any suggestions will be taken on board.
Cheers Pup

Re: Freebies
G, day Peter thanks for the heads up on that one. I believe Peter Adams book on maples has more to do with tridents, so I will see if the BS of WA has it there Library. I know we dont have it in the Workshop one. PupPeterW wrote:Pup, read Al Keplars article on growing these little maples. He has some good advise and expierience with them. Re: Freebies
Hey Pup The Peter Adams book will be fine he has many great progressions and techniques. Although he states in the book that a book on maples would not be complete without a section on Tridents, I would say there are as many other species than trident in the book. I doubt you will be disapionted though. I am thinking hard about what tree to take to his workshop.

Bonsai with Japanese Maples, it is available though Stone Lantern. I cant vouch for it as I have not read it.
A mate who grows maples has said it is not bad! so I will borrow it from the library.
I also have Morten Albeks shohin book so that should help. Hopefully by this time in August I should have gathered enough knowledge. Also I would have had some time with my mate in the UK.
Who's favorite species is Maples.
It looks like Brett might have read it though, maybe he can give us critique.
