Another shimpaku tanuki

hi guys, here is another tanuki/phoenix graft i did today, the drift wood is mopani, from chris sirre, which was a very smooth transaction

i have used two shimpaku whips for this one and feel it is going to make a nice tree over the next few years, i do need to find a pot for it later down the track when i can afford it again, for now it is in a collander and can get air pruned to make a nice dense fibrous root system

Nice one jamie. I got a few nice looking drifted woods too but haven't got ideas for them yet. Don't want to highjack your thread so I'll open a new one and hope you and others give me some suggestions.

That looks awsome, great job.
Makes me want to try one tomorrow, Tho i only have one shimpaku stock doing nothing to work with.

That would be cool if you could find that exact pot, nice choice.

hi mate

that is the actualy shape and size (to scale) of the way the pot is made, it is a tokoname pot so it will be easily accessable

the shimpaku i used had "trunks" of no more than 15mm. if the shimaku you have has longish branches and lots of them they can work really well, i used two on this one as it wasnt filling out as much as it should be.

Cool i will keep an eye out for those pots as i like them aswell.

your shimp has alot more to work with , myne is small like a bon bon, i was going to start spiralling the trunk for that cool twisted look, Sorry I forgot the term.

The extra effort is paying it off jamie. Will be a nice bonsai when established. Could be one that you will keep as a talking peice of your collection. I was just wondering if you bleech the white part with lime sulfer?

i am a very big fan of the twisted trunk shohin shimpaku, i have some on the go as we speak. mine has been on the go for abought 8 months now, it is just about to have another growth spurt as some new growing tips are starting to push out will try and get some pics for you

i do plan on limesulphuring the white section of deadwood, i might get some new lime sulphur though as the bottle i have is about 5 years old and is a little lumpy, it does give a nice grey/white colour though which looks a little more natural. i do like the bright white on certain trees though

it also might need a little detail carving but not much, maybe just a wire brush to give it a little more texture

Pics would be cool, I went to Bonsai Art on Friday to pay for my next JBP course (was just an excuse for me to get another shimp) , My gf for once didnt want anything,
I ended up walking out with two satsuki two more shimps and some small pots i didnt realy need lol

I think i will treat the wood with lime sulfer.

been pretty busy but will get some pics hopefully this arvo of the one that shows the most potential for me. i am gonna be trying to get a few more with the little bit of spending money i have from my tax return

its a shame my photography skills arent the best but i hope that changes when i get a digital camera that chris was kind enough to send to me, should come this week

when i get the camera sorted out i will get a better shot of the deadwood.

it all starts with the driftwood, get the right drift wood and its pretty easy from there, couple of shimpaku whips, some carving and away ya go
