mate rocks are gonna make the tree really quite heavy could make and interesting composition, wood is lighter and a good alternative. here is a site that has been around for a long time and is a really very cool technique displayed. http://www.dugzbonsai.com/

Wow Simo! That is possibly the most impatient 'bump' I've seen in 10+ years of Internet Bonsaiing... In future, please refrain from 'bumping' within the first 24 hours unless it is a life-threatening emergency (in which case, you are probably better off dialing 000simo_5 wrote:bumpidy bump

Now that I've got the pleasantries out of the way, I can only agree with Jarryd about the weight issue with root-over-rock. The DugzBonsai link is a ripper, and here is one at IBC that uses the same methods. I imagine that 25 seedlings is not enough for the trees in the links, but a little imagination could help you achieve a smaller variant of Doug's Tridents.
Of the 50 seedlings I received from Alpine, I expect maybe 30 to be leftover, and I am looking for a similar way of utilising them. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks.
Fly.
PS: If you're set on doing root-over-rock, it might be preferable to manufacture a hollow and/or lightweight rock. A Google for 'hypertufa' and 'ciment fondue' should find you a number of recipes and techniques for creating custom rocks that don't weigh a ton.

25 whips would be ok to do a mame, maybe shohin size tree, if you are intent on putting it on a rock, consider making a small wire frame to grow the whips on first, and get them fusing. then think about putting it on a rock, if you play it right while you are fusing the whips, have it growing in a pvc pipe to get those roots nice and long so you have plenty of roots to work with

cheers jamie, what do you mean by shohin size? i dont know what shohin means yet haha, and does the pvc pipe need to have lots of space for the roots to move, what size of pvc pipe? cheers simo

Re: ive got some trident maple whips on their way
gday simo
shohin size is total height of around 25cm, some say 20cm and others 25cm. i beleive shohin size is to be able to hold the tree in one hand without struggling.
i generally try to style my shohin between 15cm-25cm depending on stock.
the pvc pipe can be anywhere from 10cm- 15cm or even more depending on the size of your tree, how wide was the small wire frame you made? pics would be great to please
with the pvc to grow the roots long it all depends on the size of your tree. you obviously have the pvc pipe on a largish pot so when the roots grow down the pvc they will have space to grow into the pot.
