Trident maple root-over-rock (3)

Post by daiviet_nguyen »

This maple is also from a cutting. When the cutting was taken, it was also about 1 mm thick.

I cannot remember the exact age of this cutting. But it must be more than 8 years old. It has
been trained on rock for at least 5 or 6 years.

The following photos were taken on 17/August/2008.

This is a new leader, the main one was broken off by strong winds. The joint is ugly, I hope that
with times, this ugliness can be lessened a little.

I also have some earlier photos, but they do not show anything significance about this tree.

There are two rocks in the composition, one is sitting on top of the other. I used a copper wire to hold
them together -- as can be seen in View 1-Trunk. Over the years, as the roots were developing, I
use the roots to hold the rocks by crisscrossing the roots at bottom. The copper wire has been cut off.

I was told that the rocks are Western Australian, a by-product of the mining industry.

The branches have been without wires for about 2 months now. The apex still to be developed. A lot of
works still to be done on this tree.

The pot is Japanese. I bought it a few years ago at a Bonsai Society of Victoria exhibition for $130.00.
I was told it is from a late member of the club. I just love this pot. (When my time comes, who will get
hold of it?)

* Some basic measurements:
  • Pot length: 36 cm.

    Pot width: 28 cm.

Pot height: 10 cm (including the "legs".)

Tree height: would be about 43 cm.

Trunk diameter: 4 to 5 cm.

It would be interesting to see this in the nude. You have a lot of branches developing from one point which could lead to reverse taper and there is a long straight stretch on the apex [which will probably be reduced and basically eliminated as you develop the tree]. But these are two points to watch as you work on this bonsai. I love the way the roots are melting into the rock. Very good start and have fun working with this tree.
