There is no doubt #1 is the best front. Has the best movement and also the position of the live vein to the future shari up the trunk. Very nice dump should be a good one!

Gday Dumper & Co!

As usual, this time of year sees my interest turn to the conifers: it's too early to do any serious work on my deciduous trees, and I'm letting my native trees run. I've only got a few Junis, but your specimen makes me want to hit the nurseries with a full wallet! I've never encountered Sabina stock this thick/mature. Where does one find such material in Melbourne and surrounds?

Hi Dumper, I like front number 1 as well.
I hope this tree goes really well for you, I have 80 large sabinas at my place that were planted in the field from 1984-87, I plan to dig them this coming spring if my greenhouse is ready, they are a bunch of shari riddled twisted things, I plan to spend at least 5 years getting the foliage sorted, but they could be great one day.

Has anyone else grown J.sabina, I have read that in Europe they are regarded highly and can be comparable to Shimpaku.

Looks like I am going to be the odd one out. Number two if you tilt to the left, you have a live vein a much better taper, and continuity of line.

In number one you have an abrupt curve line at the top, it does have a pleasing line, which however needs a lot more carving.

If it was mine I would go with number two tilted.
A second look has me even more convinced. The tachiagari ( the movement from the nebari to the first branch ) moves away from the viewer.
Which is not a pleasing affect, and as Lindsay has suggested what is the movement of the nebari.

have you investigated the roots below the pot. I remember thinking of the wind when you selected this sabina. The tree grew at our fattening farm for about 3 decades. One year before I dug it I cut it back hard ( to no green growth) in spring
Then dug it the following year in winter ( with new shoots).

hi lindsay, this has been grown well, one thing you have said has me absolutely stumped though, you cut it back to no green growth? does that mean a bare trunk, i would of been for certain it would of carked it?

Lindsay i did check the root to get a windswept on it. the roots are mostly all leading to the other side which is hard to make it windswept.
i'll leave it like that for the time being. let more growth happening first and really decide what to do.

i like it to be windswept too. will be my first.

hi dumper, i have to agree with pup on photo 2. the reverse taper of the trunk in photo 1 is why i lean to the 2nd photo as a front. photo 3 has possibilities also. cheers, miyagiman.
