As the final part of the public presentation at this year's native bonsai show in Canberra I showed some inspirational shots of native bonsai.
First up was a development series of Melaleuca alternifolia from Melaquin.
Melaquin has already posted these here viewtopic.php?f=104&t=2593&start=0 so I won't put them up again.
Melaquin's tree was in the show and a few people commented that it was great to actually see the development of one of the trees on show.
The following pics of native bonsai are a collection of images from Pup, Grant at the National Collection and some I have snapped at various shows over the past few years.
Hope they inspire you to try more natives as bonsai.
First up a species that I nominated as an Aussie icon as luck would have it I had a photo of the tree at an earlier show
A couple of other banksias Banksia serrata, AABC seminar, Melb 2007
Another Aussie icon - Acacia
A few images from Pup in Perth (hope I've got the captions on the right images!): From a garden makeover 2005. 330mm x 330mm. Pat Kennedy pot
Collected from a garden makeover 2006. 400mm x 400mm. Japanese pot.
from nursery stock 2 years ago 330mm x 300mm Japanese pot This one really impresses me as typical of the natural growth habit of Melaleuca in the WA swamps - the main branches arch and twist out from the trunk with a tuft of foliage at the end of each branch. Check some photos of Melaleucas or look at the real thing to see wahat I mean
collected from a garden makeover 2005. 570mm x 600mm Pat Kennedy pot.
from nursery stock 2007. 400mm x 400mm. Chinese pot
Collected from a Perth swamp 2004. 400mm x 300mm. Handmade pot from W.A.
Collected from a swamp that was to become a 4 lane hwy 2004. 430 mm x 400mm. Japanese pot
Note that Pup gets a lot of stock from garden makeovers. Something for would be native collectors to keep in mind rather than ransacking wild stocks!
More inspiring native bonsai images to come next time
