Post by anttal63 »

this is the first jbp i puchased 3yrs ago. back then i had no idea about energy balancing of pines. somethings i got right out of general pruning knowledge and somethings i stuffed up. all in all its now coming back on track and eventually will be a nice tree. :D

I like this one too. But I think you have keep a watchful eye on this one, you will have to make a new leader for it.

The current one does not have enough branches -- (or there are but I cannot see from the photos?) If I were you, I would like
think about cutting it back right above the first topmost branch. And make a new leader from there. Might be you will keep
two leaders, one would be a real one in the future, the other one is a sacrificed one?

What are you plans for the lowest branch? Are you thinking of twin-trunk?

Viet.

I like the other one better. Are you going to let it grow on or what height are you hoping to finish with?

Hi Antonio, I like your JBP's and would like to understand a little more about them. Would you be interested in typing a month by month program of events or perhaps even a progression series with one of them.

Is it my imagination, or have you attempted to air layer the top of this one (just above the first branch).

viet, you got it in the end. the one you chose is the future leader and the other a sacrafice. that is the reason it has no branches. sacrafices are stripped to a lions tail on pines if you want to optimise it. the lowest branch is a sacrafice but at the same time im ramifying close to the trunk for options. either detailed jin or yes could be a twin trunk. i havent made my mind up on this one yet, grow on or shohin??? thanks peterw too there's your answer. what do you think?

thanks for chewing the fat with me. :D

john thanks for your interest, i will document all the important work i do on all these trees. no airlayer here that was trunk chop already there when i got it, then i cleaned and shaped it with a dremel. that will need farther carving in future in order to shape the swell out of it. :D

pruned, thinned, plucked and wired to keep somethings in check and others to grow on. this styling is more so to distribute the energy, get branches pulled down but positioned to get max. light in. this is not the final placements. this tree already has a very nice radial spread of roots, thanks to the early work i put in. in the next couple of months when i repot into a smaller size poly box, i will post up. any feed back or questions are welcome. ;) :D

Coming along nicely mate!
Have you decided yet if you are going to grow it on (up) or create a nice shohin?
Any chance on a close up of the base? I'd like to see what you have done down there too.
Thanks for sharing this progression!

Hi there Antonio,

Seeing the last two, I am wondering --

1. Is it worth to keep the lowest "branch"? Are you planning to grow a bigger trunk? Or can this be made
into a twin trunk?

2. I think (from the picture) the distances between the second, third and fourth branches are in good shape.
But from the fourth upward it seems that inter-nodes are getting bit longer?

I usually got this feeling with pines when I was not able to cut off the young branches on times to reduce the
inter-nodes.

Just my humble observations :) I think with careful training, it will make a good one in the future.

Best regards.

Nice work Ant
I am assuming the branch Daviet is referring to is just a sacrifice? To be removed once done it work?

spot on ken thanks.

viet as stated earlier in this thread. i love options and optimisations. when i feel its time to go into a bonsai pot is when the sacrafices come off and even then one needs to think twice, cause once they gone, much harder to widen your base. i dont think a twin trunk here but maybe jin and shari. the internodes on top part are not really a concern at this point. im having fun learning how to grow jbp's and eventually it will all come out in the wash, one way or another. (advantatious buds or/and trunk chops) thanks for the input mate. :D ;)

Hi Antonio, nice one!
When you post again in the next few days, can you please include some more pics please?...so I can see where the branches are coming off the trunk :tu2:
The very top of the jinned trunk looks like a deer/antelopes head :)
Cheers, Dario.
