Thats a ripper LL I was about to say stick a hornbeam in it but then I realised you are in SE Q so I guessa fig will have to do.
I would consider moving up that way but I don't want to leave my hornbeams behind

id really love to collect something old and wild.. (wishfull thinking!)

Great idea Luke,and so simple. How about a Queensland umbrella, their fast and beautiful. When i get mine i will try it in a box like this one.

Don't wish mate make it happen. Always keep an eye out for what might be right in front of you. I was slow it took me about 4 years before I noticed all the plum trees flowering on the side of the road which led me to many other species that are great candidates.

great advise there brett! you know whats amazing... what iv been discovering every day... its the same old car/train/bus trips, but now i see all the trees!!!!
and its more than just see.... i now appreciate! its like a new world!
as for potential bonsai.... i will keep looking!

Seeing as your base is Shadecloth, I would think long and hard about sticking a fig in there. If you end up going with one, make sure the box is way up of the ground so you have plenty of chances to prune the roots as they head on down.

I some times use shade cloth in the bottom of grow boxes. Have you found an issue with this Greame?

thats pretty much what i have in the bottom of my fast growth system box graeme, didnt think it would be a prob with the tile under neath it as it will be getting root pruned every 6-12 months or so yea???

Same feeling here Luke, but my family rolls eyes heavenward when I spot yet another promising tree everywhere I go... Oh, and we can't travel without a trowel, bucket and secateurs!
