Trees from the US National Bonsai Collection
Happy Holidays to all the great folks here at Ausbonsai.
As a holiday treat, I would like to share some photos that I took at the US National Arboretum. These are photos of some of the trees of the US National Bonsai Collection and were taken in June of this year during a visit to the Washington D.C. area.
I will post the photos a few at a time. Please feel free to join in and share your thoughts.
Follow me:
Here is a photo of the main entrance to the collection.
And here are a few of the trees to get you going: What do you thing so far?
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Trees from the US National Bonsai Collection
beautiful Paul and cannot wait the see the rest
The 1st one (JBP) is that really reverse taper or just the photo? the botton section of the trunk looks thinner than the section above the bend. Has the bark been knocked off or something?
The Zelcova is stunning
, Love the nebari on it

Re: Trees from the US National Bonsai Collection
A few years ago Janet Sabey (SA.B.S.) paid a visit to this collection. She later visited Darwin and gave the Club up there a 'Slide Night' of the photo's she took. I was amassed at the quality of the trees and the size of some of them blew me away completly. Ah. one day!!! (maybe)

I do not know the history of this particular JBP so I cannot say for sure. However, I believe this is not uncommon for this particular species of black pine. Many of the cork bark black pines that I have seen exhibit this type of appearance.
Here are a few more photos for ya:
More to come.
Have a great day.
Cheers,
Paul

i have not seen one that does not show this characteristic. they tell me because they are grafted. 1936 grafted??? i have one and for the life of me i cannot find the graft junction and is too young to have healed that well.

Re: Trees from the US National Bonsai Collection
Thanks for the great feedback mates.
Antonio,
I believe you are correct about the cork bark black pines. It is my understanding that they are all grafted and at some point in time will show the graph union in this way.
I will need to do some research, but if my memory is not failing me to badly, one of these white pines is a Hiroshima survivor.
Here are a few more for your viewing pleasure: Stay tuned, more to come.
Cheers,
Paul
