Ausbonsai Comunity Olive Dig and Demo with Don Deluca

Post by Bretts »

I have organised a trip out to visit Don Deluca out at Hay for the Orange Bonsai club in Autumn. I mentioned that we would be looking at collecting some Olives while we where out that way and Don generously offered us his collecting area of Olives.
So when JayC suggested that we organise an Olive collecting trip for ausbonsai members I did a bit of calling around and got permission to open it up to Ausbonsai members.
Hay is about 7 hours drive from Sydney, 5 hours from Melbourne, and about 4 hours from the Orange area. So I figure we should make it a weekend camp over.
I also figured it was a great opportunity to have Don put on a Demonstration for us.
This started to sound like a hell of a good idea.
Don states there are hundreds (or was it thousands :? ) of Olives in size ranging from the size you can just pull out of the ground to the size needing a bobcat to dig out. He also states that the olives in this area are of a great quality that the roots tend to flare out in the hard clay instead of creating the tuber that is common. He used a dinner plate as an example of their form. So whether you are looking for one great tree or three or so medium size trees this will surely offset the travel costs.
We have no set date at the moment except for Autumn.
So I am looking for expressions of interest on who would like to spend a camping weekend(there is hotel accommodation if you prefer) with Don collecting Olives and having one of the the real good guys of Australian bonsai show us his collection and how to collect and style one of the best bonsai species there is.
I will open discussion on which weekend will suit the most people. We do have the Easter weekend around that time but many may have other obligations at that time.
So who's in and what weekend do you suggest?
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Looking forward to seeing you there Noah.
One thing I forgot to mention is that Don is after an African Small leaf Olive that is in the Golbourn area so we need to make an effort to get hold of one for him before we head out there ;)

3 days from Perth other wise I would be in it. May I suggest that you all take a couple of gallons= 4.5 litres of water.
Last time I was in Dons company he suggested he can find you a glass of wine or a beer, but water is far too precious.
Should be a fun week end.

Cheers ;) Pup

HI Brett
If you can make it in the next couple of months I am in for 100% sure.

I think my father would also be interested in coming

Jay C, you are more than welcome to travel with me. PM me if you would like to be picked up.

Ken, bring your ute mate, cause as you know my car will have limited olive retrieval capacity :D

I wonder whether a guy I know would be interested in being picked up..... I wonder whether he will pick up ón this hint. I know he is here very very often, but it would be a pleasure if my friend would like to accompany us....cmon mate, travel with us in style  :D :D

Regards
Steve

Sounds like fun and I could be in, depending on exact dates.

Looks like Easter may be out (2 - 5 April), and AABC convention weekend should also be out (14 - 17 May).

You have certainly caught my attention. I would love to add an olive to my collection and it seems that all the good ones come from 'olive digs'
I am prepared to move heaven, earth (lots of it) and even Antonio  (if it comes to that) in an effort to attend
Regards Gerard
Q: Why are we all here?
