hey people :D

today after a very hot and windy nursery crawl this morning i come home with a lovely little buxus harlandii. this little tree at first was hidden among others and didnt jump out at me till i nearly fell over it walking out to my car  :D

the first thing i noticed was the nice gnarly corkiness to the trunk, then the taper, then the potential.

here it is as i got it.
buxus before.jpg
from here came branch selection and thinning, it took a bit to work out as there was so many branches. but that was a good thing, it gave me plenty of choice.
after 10 minutes of trimming and selecting, i wired up what i had and placed them where they needed to be, i dont think it will take long to set as buxus generally have brittle branches, wiring has only been done as the branches are young and maluable.

so here it is after an initial style, i think it still needs some tweaking especially the back branch, i think it needs to be raised slightly.

and here is a close up of the trunk at the base, it has some awesome corking and gnarling :D the nebari will need some work but i am not to stressed bout that right now :D
buxus close up.jpg

now to the size of this little one, the base at just above the nebari is 1 inch thick (25mm) with the nebari it pushes out to about just under 2 inches (40mm)
and the overall height from soil line is only 6 inches high (150mm) so it is sitting right in the perspective of the 6:1 ration, which will make it look right :D
overall i am pretty happy with how it has turned out so far, i think with some good feed and some good sun it will push some great growth and the pads wont take too long to be in shape :D

thanks for looking, any comments are always welcome :D

a bit of a virt of where i will be taking this one in the next couple of years :D

a bit of ramification should bring this up to scratch in not to much time, the trunk size is where i want it its just branch work i need to concentrate on now, and a bit of work on the roots too :D

thanks shannon :D i am hoping it works out well, from the bit of research i have done on them they seem to bounce back quite well and since the tree is only small and the trunk is already at the size i want it is just a case of refinement, so i am hoping it wont take that long before it is of a good quality.

Nice pick up Jamie.
Everything seems to fit in the right place as if this tree was waiting for you. I expect it will look very nice very soon, I look foreward to seeing its progress

Fantastic looking tree dude! I look at boxwoods all the time when I go to nurseries, but still haven't got one yet =P
I'm not sold on the deep blue. Personally, I think ti will draw too much attention away from the tree. I think a pale blue or a pale green/greenish blue. Oval would work well.
JMHO =)

thanks mate :D this one took me three years to find, i had the oppurtunity to get one similar to this at the time but i walked away from it went back a couple of weeks later and it was gone, typical, but i found another :D you dont often see them with a trunk like this over the size and height of the tree.
i think the deep blue would work but if you got other ideas, or pics let me know :D

hey people :D

i got home this afternoon after work and walked down to my bonsai area and seen this little one screaming at me, put me in a pot, put me in a pot, so i couldnt resist the little guy and just had to do it, i had a pot that was lying around (which was the dark blue one i was thinking about) and potted him up :D
overall i am quite happy with it, i didnt have to remove to many roots, it was just a quick trim and a tickle, the great thing about it was that there was a whole heap of thick, lucious new white roots, so it is pushing well. i think it will probably need a repot next year.
as i stated in an early post now its just a mater of developing the ramification which i think will be able to be built while in the pot :D if it doesnt push new growth hard enough while in the pot i will pull it out later down the track and put it back in a grow box :D
