Maple struggling

Hey guys I have these 2 maples. Ones got good leave up top but the other barley going anything. Any adviceImage

The second one does not look too good. The brown patches on the trunk probably indicate some dead bark and underlying tissue I think. I don't know what has caused it but I would be pretty confident that is what is causing the problems with growth up top.
The potting mix looks pretty dry in that picture. Most trees are using a lot of water at the moment as they grow and develop new leaves so I actually water mine a bit more through spring to make up for the extra they need as well as the longer, drier days.
