Seiju Elm suggestion

Post by Ians1 »

I have had this seiju elm for a while now and struggling to work out which way to go, faults I can see is it’s crows feet on on side, will just trimming some of them away when repot fix or reduce this
Also the 3 branches emanating from to same spot is creating a large swelling, reverse taper
My newby thoughts is to remove the 2 smaller branches create an air layer through the largest part
What would the possibility of the 2 smaller branches that would need to be removed striking as a cutting,Image
I hate waste Image

I love these trees. They air layer / strike well just very slow to develop. If that was mine, I would lean the whole potted tree on an angle and select which branch to keep as the main trunk. That would be your new tree planted on an angle. Then I would air layer the remaining two branches you don’t want. Once they are removed I would at a later date ring bark the bottom of the original tree on the chosen angle and bury it deeper to create a new root system.
Nice tree with great potential. :imo:

My first thought is to turn it into two trees: do an aerial layer just below the main branching and turn the top part into a kind of clump style (and eliminate the reverse taper); and allow branches to grow freely on the bottom part and see what transpires.

Seiju strike well from cuttings so you would have a good chance of getting roots on any branches you remove.
They also grow well from root cuttings so any roots you remove should also be planted and should also grow. root cuttings can make really good small trees or grow them on into larger trees.
Taking off some of the roots will probably improve the nebari but that depends what is on the other side when you unpot. You can remove quite a lot of roots if needed without compromising the tree. They normally have long, thick, unbranched roots so you may have to do some harsh pruning to get better root ramification but that will only give you more root cuttings.

Removing the extra branch will stop the bulge getting worse but won't reverse the process so you will probably have to put up with the bulge or remove it at some stage.
Plenty of pruning seems to be the key to overcoming Seiju tendency for long, straight shoots. I think this one may have been let go a little too long at some stage as there's not much branching. Good news is that they respond to hard pruning at any stage.

I see some twisted and plaited maple trunks in the background. Should be some interesting trees in future...
