Think I ight finally see a tree

I was too slack to change the date on the camera or stop it from showing up
I thought $14 was a bargain but the guy marked it down 50% when I took it to the counter. Should have seen the look on his face when I said I was making a bonsai out of it

i am sure when you start to style this one you will see what you are looking for and originally seen what you did when you bought it. even if it was sub-conscious

This was my first attempt I thought I was Picasso with a tree

Then I woke up the beers had worn of and I realised I had a problem.

Not a classic pot but I figure it will look OK for now and it gives me lots of freedom to shape the branches.

This is where I need some help. I gather this is "about" the time to re-pot Juniper. The root ball combed out about as good as I could have hoped, for a tree that was severely root bound 4 years ago. I must have done some thing right It had about 1/3 to 1/2 the root ball removed. Most of the surface soil was a redundant mess off old roots that could be broken away leaving the trailing roots as seen in pic.
I wonder how much foliage should be removed. If I clean it out some and bend the main branches will this be OK? Should I aim to remove a decent amount of foliage?

ok, i can see your going for cascade here.. have you thought maybe semi cascade?? as i see it, you have a hell of a lot more growth to get full cascade with that pot.

think less of a tail and go for more of a semi i think. from what i can see of it anyways.

The pot looks pretty good this morning The biggest plus on choosing this pot at the moment is it gives me the most styling options being very narrow and tall as well.
You got me curious on the definition of semi or full cascade so I just looked it up In Deborah's book.

Semi Cascade style
By definition, if a straight line is drawn from base of the trunk to the tip of the tail of a semi cascade, the angle should be between 45 degrees above and a few degrees below the horizontal. Usually a semi cascade does not fall far below the top rim and sometimes one might hear that a tree may be classified as a semi cascade if the tail does not fall below the bottom of the pot. Such a definition works well, providing the pot is of medium depth or semi deep. If the pot is quite deep, however the may be a full cascade even though the tail does not fall below the bottom of the container. For this reason the distinction by angle is more accurate.

I am not concerned wich it falls in at the moment but I am thinking it will be full cascade

Fly's telling me he can't remember this juni.

It was from one of the infamous Bonsai Talk online styling contests They had so many dam rules that you would have thought we where playing for ranches.
I had to take a picture of the tree with the newspaper to prove it was a current picture as the date on the camera was wrong
The trees where voted on by the members I think Fly gave me about 4 out of ten I thanked him for his comments in Chat and he had to go check his comment to make sure I was not being sarcastic Many just gave a score and no comment so it was great to get feedback

I finished in about the bottom 1/3 of the field which I thought was about right compared to the other entries. There was a few there that I would have been upset about getting a lower score than.
Some of the comments I remember where "I don't see a Tree" "The jin should not be obscured by branches" and Fly said some thing about how he would like to see it when it matures. So here ya go Fly

I would love to do some work on it today but I am almost as naive with Junipers as I was 4 years ago.

I would really like an answer to. What horticultural consideration for Juniper must I be aware of to continue work on this today!
