Chinese Elm caught me by surprise

Geeeze!
A few days of mild weather, and my Chinese Elms are budding out already!
6th July is 3 weeks early!
Mad scramble into repot mode this weekend.

Mine generally don’t drop leaves and continue growing slowly through winter.

I mentioned in another post that the Chinese Elm can be repotted year round in Brisbane, according to the handbook I received when I joined BIMER. TBH I've been messing with them all through Autumn, repotting some, and so on....

I have a Japanese Maple still with lush green leaves!!! It got scorched late summer, and was 1 of 3 that leafead out again. I’m giving up on the JM’s due to climate.

I have an hakkaido elm that’s just turning yellow. The elms that got scorched too have lost their old leaves with a few newer ones looking fine. All have had new buds slowly opening over the last month. Haven’t checked the trident seedlings but I wouldn’t be surprised to see new buds opening. All my Pinus spp. have been slowly developing through winter.

All said, elms are tough buggers. I’m sure you could repot in high summer and they wouldn’t slow down.

Hi wrc, don't be too concerned about your C.E 's, I've worked on mine, including root pruning and using the cuttings of roots to grow more in spring. They just kept going. Mine all have buds ready to burst open too, and the first of my tridents have opened buds today. If we have the forecast 25C tomorrow my Japanese maple will probably open its buds too. Most of my trees seem to think spring is here already.

Don't give up - for the first time this year mine spent 12 months in nearly full shade with only a couple of hours per day in summer of mottled sunlight... no leaf burn and beautiful autumn colour.

Crap. I live fairly close to you, and if my tridents decide it's spring in July then I have been totally caught with my pants down.... I have growing beds that weren't due for digging until late August!.

1st July... noticed it budding out today.
This tree was potted into its final container 2 years ago, and has budded out 3-4 weeks earlier since then. Puzzled.

My tridents are still only in the process of finishing leaf drop, and this elm decides it's time to wake up already!

Let me tell you that doesn't happen at my place, there are plenty more frosts to come this season.

I have an issue with a dwarf mulberry the last 2 years it has dropped leaves in late April, then pushed new growth in early June. The new growth didn't survive the frosts. As it is in the ground I tried wrapping in hessian this year, not successful.

Looks like it's time to pot it up.

I'm in Melbourne where the temperature is 12C-15C, and all my Chinese Elms are green.

I’m in Melbourne too and mine have just finished dropping leaves, couple of rogue ones here and there left but that’s all.

In Melbourne in the yarra Valley - one elm yelling up nicely and Caitlin is both dropping leaves and trowing new buds at the same time. Fun to watch. Jaqueline Hillier elm as green as new spring grass and still budding.

All my elms have dropped their leaves, but I’ve got a trident maple that wants to hang on to its leaves and they’re green, stupid thing and it’s out in open with the frosts. palm:

I had a similar experience a few years ago Rod. I pruned the grow beds in autumn and the trees decided to shoot new growth then refused to drop the new leaves and held them through to spring growth. all normal again after that so no long term effect.

Some of my catlin elms now have yellow leaves, some still green. All others have dropped but they always bud up first while it is still quite cold. They are my reminder each year to get on with repotting the other deciduous.
