lecture and demo at bunnings rockhampton

Post by Matthew »

Hi guys

Just thought id let you know that our local bunnings has invited our club (capricorn bonsai society) to do a lecture and a demo at there store. They get alot of customers ask about the bonsai they stock and sell ( care requirements etc) of which they have little knowledge about. We will be giving a speech on general care etc, species suitable for our climate up here ( not the poor little spruce that they sell :( ) I will have some of my better trees on display to show people up this way what a more developed tree looks like. Will also be doing a small demo with which material bunnings is supplying ( they have trays of figs, olive, junipers i think?) it has been avertised the last few weeks now and i know the local paper is keen to do a spread. Hopefully it will draw some new members into the club too :)

its on at 6.30pm
thursday 8th october at the rockhampton bunnings store.

G,day Noah glad to see that Bunnings will get some real tree's in there store albeit for a short period.
Be careful who you give address;s phone number and name to. Speaking from Bitter experience.

Good luck any promotion of what Bonsai is about, needs to be congratulated :D

pup i agree totally, im usually pretty weary and dont give my home address out more a phone number or email to people i dont know. We dont have a bonsai nursey here for about 500km so this is about it. i travel for most of my stock or buy from people i meet online. For beginners and people who have heard about bonsai but dont really know what they are i think this will be a good experiance and good for the club i hope :D will keep the thread up dated and take some photos. See if we get a good turnout.

You should have plenty of display trees to choose from. ;)
I guess it won't be kosher to tell the customers not to buy bonsai from bunnings
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Hi guys thought id update the thread.

We had a pretty good turnout for the night 20 plus so i was more than happy with that. Me been lazy i totally forgot my camera but Buddaboy was kind enough to make the trip from Gladstone and did get a couple of shots which hopefully if they turned out he might post :D Alot of people were interested in the club and filled out information cards etc. Hopefully we will see some of them this months meeting. Bunnings supplied some material, few figs, a seven year old shimpaku juniper , shore juniper for us to work on. Was difficult to try to explain alot of information about what we were doing to the trees and why to people but hopefully some of it made sence. Bunnings was very happy with the turnout and are wanting to make it a regular event. The had a lucky dip prize too and someone won one of the trees.
some one wanted to buy my little privet alas they thought it was cheap cause it was small, thats not always the case with bonsai :o

Hey noah, Dont forget the Bunnings employee who tried to put a price on your Fig  . And when given a Ballpark figure to buy something like this in Aus, his Face looked like this  . All joking aside, it was a good demo and the info given out was excellent for the many Bonsai Newbies Present. The explanations of what you did and why you did them was clearly understood(My missus went along and could understand what they meant). Having a good look at the wiring done has also given me back the confidence to start wiring again after 15 years of abstinence due to multiple fatalities. It was also good to see Noah taking one of the larger "finished" Bunnings trees, and pinch trimming and wiring to make it look like a bonsai in development instead of a bush in a pot. I never take enough photos but Ill pot what I took:

Thanks again Noah, to you and your club.
