new trident from northside!
hey guys, another one of my new raw stock trees to go along with my juniper is this trident maple, tess didnt have what i was after in her usual area so she was really great and went out back and found what i was after! such a nice lady tess is!
this ones trunk is quite thick even though it doesnt look like it, the nebari flare goes out to about 5 inches! stands just over 14 inches tall from the soil line. this has some great potential. i am going to take it back to a bare trunk with selctivly taking out the thick trunks on top. (advice on this would be great, which trunk to take out, etc).
any way enough babble. here it is. raw as.
all of the tree still as is in the photo, i dont have any tools with me because im on holiday!

Re: new trident from northside!
the "better nebari" picture matches to the top "nice trunk movement" picture if anyone was wondering how this tree goes together

chopping is definatley the plan, going down to one line of trunk i dont want this to be big i want it to be of shohin size. once chopped, can this be potted and developed from there?

Re: new trident from northside!
however you want design this tree, even if it is taller. the best tree is in the 1st shoot. you did say shohin. this stump is no where near sumo.

Re: new trident from northside!
I like the smaller version, more compact and highlights the lovely movement in the trunk.
Hint: When you want a virtual on a tree remove it from the pot and scrape soil away from the nebari so it is shown in all its glory. Then take your photographs, preferably 4 sides or 1 if there is obviously THE good side. It's easier to work out possibilities when you see all the tree and it is easier to get ideas to design a tree when you can see the nebari and then the sweep up the trunk.

Re: new trident from northside!
I would put a layer on the tree, just below the spot where all the branches come off, to make a clump, then take the long whips from above and thread graft all the branches you need. i.e. first, second back and one to build an apex.
