Chinese Elm trunk taper
This has been on the mind from the day I purchased these tree's after seeing a topic on a forum many years ago . While layers and root cuttings were taken first , Waste nothing I believe the bases were worked on before planting out into the ground . The trunks are on the move so its time to get stuck into them . While they had very little taper and movement from ground level i have utilized the large bases by removing large roots and slicing a wedge out of the trunks has created good movement and taper.
Cheers Alpineart
Mark the trunk , cut with a power saw , finish with a hand saw , remove the wedge , drill pilot holes and countersink ,apply gorilla glue as directions , insert stainless screws , plant back into ground , even the wedges were driven into the soil . Now wait and see these spring into life over the next few weeks . Now to stop playing around and get back into some serious planting ,Cheers Alpineart

This is great! I sure hope it works. Have you had success with this method before? Looking forward to the update.

Re: Chinese Elm trunk taper
Hi guys and gals , this is the first time I have tried this particular method , no reason why it wont be a success . Trunks fuse together in many different situations in nature . I have seen this done before but never seen an update on the method . With such a large root mass and the vigor of the Chinese Elm it will certainly grow .
I have fused many types of plants over the years Pines , Junipers , Maples , Hornbeams , olives etc , however this approach was only used on an olive . The smaller trunk has a 120mm base 300mm high , the larger trunk has a 150mm base and 400mm high , either way they will continue to grow . I have 3 other trunks to play with so i will consider the best approach for them as they are removed .
Cheers . Alpine

I decided to finish the job on the Elms ,

1 trunk was completely severed but it will still grow and fuse , the largest trunk has a potential base of 180mm plus .Cheers . Alpineart

Re: Chinese Elm trunk taper
Hi peterb, been lacking inspiration and motivation with bonsai over the last few months , life on lifes terms just got in the way . Like these I hope to start to sprout the interest again as things around here are very neglected .
