Contorted hazlenut

Post by WoodWizard »

I got this corylus alvelena contorta( crazy philbert ) as a gift from a supplier at my work, now what to do with it !! I have no idea on how to Even begin styling this plant, obviously the possibilities are endless but I'd love for any ideas or advice, I've grown these wholesale before and the only problems we ever had was them being covered in mites when in leaf. Other than that they were simple to grow and relativly problem free.

Looks like great stock to me.
If your happy with trunk girth maybe wait until repot when you can see the nebari and select a front /trunk line etc.

Probably worth having a look on the net to see if there is any species specific advice / things to look out for.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

I have seen some nice results with this species, grown as a natural broom style the unusual growth habit makes a good feature. Leaves are large and the tree is best displayed when out of leaf or showing the early spring growth. Do not fight the wild habit but work with it. See the link.

My biggest problem I can see is that I have a branch very low then beyond that nothing for a good 10m then more branching , get rid of the low branch and enhance the trunk ? And grow as a taller style bonsai ? I really don know what to do

I think it needs to be taller because of the leaf size

I have one of these also that each time I look at it I think "what am I going to do with this". Will watch this with interest. I know of a nursery that has these with a trunk about 15-20 thick. Looked at them many times but the price is a little high for me. Please keep us updated with where you go with this one.

I think your on the right track so far. I'm not sure about the first branch :lost: :imo: it's a bit low for a first branch but too high for a twin trunk. I wouldn't remove it yet though, see how it goes, in the mean time it will fatten the trunk for you and you can always remove it later if it doesn't work. I think these trees have great potential but seen a little hard to find direction at first but once you pick you line your on the way. Good start :tu:
