New Prebonsai Junipers

Post by Slothman »

Ok this post is several tests. Posting an image for the first time on the site and generally just starting a "help me" thread.

First off, I realise this is a poor quality pic and when I want more detailed assistance I will take better pics with flat backgrounds etc.

This was done last night after cleaning up some new pre bonsai stock I have acquired over the last few days as I wanted to see what was underneath. I am traveling to Melbourne next week and coming back through Perth will call into Bonsai Emporium for some supplies etc.

These trees (and a couple of figs) where purchased from a board member AndrewC from Denmark. He has some great pre bonsai stock that I plan on visiting and acquiring more in Feb. I visited on the weekend, bought the trees, left them in the car and played a round of golf...poor little buggers got a touch burnt.

I got this one purely for the cool trunk. I will provide better pics later. Last night I literally spent ten minutes removing dead growth and pinching some overly long areas as well as some basic cleaning between branches etc. There is a lot more basic cleaning to do but I didn't have my cutting tray good to go so will do that over the next few nights before the weekend. I noticed several options here with this one and they all included jins (which I have NEVER attempted so should be fun).

First priority is to locate some of those "colander pots" and essentially transfer this across as it needs a new home. With that done I will be keeping pruning and shaping to a minimum for a few weeks but when I get around to it I will use that post by Grant I believe about Creating randomness with rules.

I have tentatively noted this as my "First Bonsai". Everything else is growing etc. This could probably also do with some more, but I am now at the stage of "wanting to pot something" :fc:

This poor bugger. I am still not sure why I picked this. Size? It just kind of drew me in. Regardless I figured it would be a good learning item. However this suffered the extended exposure to the heat in the car :(. Most of the new fresh growth has since faded. I gave it a very basic clean but left a lot as I didn't want to attack it too much not knowing how to help it recover. I am keeping the water up to it and will be starting a regime of Seasol tonight. Pretty much going to leave it alone and try to nurse it back to health :)

Nice to see mate, looks like you are getting stuck right in :)

You'll enjoy the Bonsai Emporium, that place is filled with goodies, and Peter (the owner) is a great guy to have a chat with

Can't give you too much advice, still being a newbie myself, but make sure you get them to good health before you really start getting stuck into them, you'll have a much better chance of them pulling through that way. The first one looks like it could turn out real nice

And don't worry about the 'why did I get this again' scenario... I go through that every trip to the nursery :P I get home and think "now what exactly did I see in this when I was buying it", its easy to get swept up in the excitment of getting new matieral
