$15 buxus with nice bark

Post by Josh »

Again from one of my favourite nurseries I picked up this Buxus for $15. It was overgrown, in need of a re pot and a feed. It has great bark and given some time to recoup will come up nice.

I find these are usually full of ants and the root ball is half missing from the ants but they respond well to root pruning and potting up.
The last one I got like this ended up looking like this

Will update as it progresses.

Very cool :tu: I like your other tree too but the new one has an even more interesting base depending which way you take it. I had one very similar from my local nursery. That was until I learnt to never defoliate a buxus :palm:

I knew at the time that it was stupid but I was having trouble forcing back budding and the branches were just too long and as you know near impossible to bend. I thought it might be worth a shot. It wasn't.. Ahh well live and learn.

This one will end up more interesting than the other one. The best way to get these to back bud is get them healthy, feed regularly and SLOWLY cut back always leaving foliage. If you don't want to cut back then feeding and I sometimes damage the bark to try and induce a bud. They must be healthy though unlike this one. I will root prune and pot this one up then leave to recover before doing anything else. The roots are full of ants so I find most will be dead and can be cut off with out to much problem to allow it to grow.

I like your new purchase mate and with a little time and TLC it will be a good (hopefully very good) small bonsai with plenty of character.

Hi Josh,

You seem to be taking the tree in a great direction. Looks like you have found a nice LITTLE gem in that mass of foliage.
