gale force wind left me no choice

hi everyone

friday morning gale force wind hit melbourne. i thought i was prepared from the last few strong winds we had. a few trees got blown over to their side but no damage, until i found this old collected radiata pine on the ground with its pot(a good japanese one too) smashed to pieces. obviously shocked and immediately proceeded to check for damages to the tree itself. after having a good look, i was relieved to find the tree pretty much came away unscathed. i have always meant to do more refined work on the tree since the last styling, but have put it off due to all the other works that needed to be done around the nursery. well, mother nature has spoken.

the original pot was almost identical to the new pot except that it was oval shape. perhaps not the best pot but will do for now.

i hope everyone out there are prepared enough for the strong winds that are still to come.

The wind can be a particularly nasty occurrence especially as can sometimes be all of a sudden event.

What a shame Tien. Good excuse to work on it though and it looks better for it. Glad nothing else was damaged, was thinking about your shade area when it was really blowing. What you mean all the other work to be done, you haven't got much to do around there have you I hate the wind, dries my pots out quicker than a hot day. Neighbours fence fell down but nothing else major.

very funny Josh, and quite frankly, the shadehouse area is alot more organized now having spent the last two months sorting out the stock. still got a lot more to do, well, it never ends.

just finished the needle thinning and wiring on all the JBP in 10 inch pot a month ago. only have a couple of hundred of them, so it's not too bad. my nightmare begins when it's time to do the same to those in 8 inch pot, have way too many(don't know how many, have given up counting them). not to mention a new batch of seedlings from last year in 3 inch pot, a bit more than 1000 of them. all being root pruned when they were potted up. once they put on a bit of growth will attempt to wire them all, just like their predecessors. did i mention i like JBP

as you can see, the apex is wired and shaped. i am waiting for another season of growth to have more branches to form a rounded apex.
or do you have suggestions of how to shape the apex? all suggestions are welcome.

Its just the first thing I noticed in the first photo was the amazing trunk line you have on this tree. I then notice in the newly potted and styled photo that the trunk line is not the first thing I notice and I am trying to decide if that detracts from the tree? Do you consider that bringing the foliage down like that disguises the elegant trunk line that stood out before you styled this tree? Like I said I am not intending to be disrespectful just trying to understand if I am seeing these thing right or clearly.

of course i am not offended at all . if anything, it kind of got me thinking. before i try to answer your question, let me share with u what i thought about the tree after the styling. firstly, i thought the tree is a bit too tall and i am considering going as far down as the second branch on the left to wire up as the new top. secondly, i thought the tree is a bit wide and will definately go back to any back budding in the coming years. but for now, i need the tree to grow and all the foliage is helping the tree to get there.

that is exactly what i thought :amazing trunk line and nothing else. obviously the tree was styled before but the foliage have grown to the point where it does not contribute to the quality of the tree any more. therefore the thinning out of the needles and rearrangement of the branches were done with the purpose of highlighting the trunk line with a more balanced and appropriate branch structures and foliage mass.

certainly to me the lowering of the branches doesn't do to me what it does to you. so i don't really have an answer for you. i wonder what everyone else think?

Like i said not speaking from experience just what I see. The chances are I will see it differently every time I look at it. Your very last photo from straight on shows the trunk more clearly but the second last one sort of hides it? When that first right branch fills out will it cover more do you think? If so does that bother you. Maybe its not a concern. Just trying to learn a little about styling and making the right choices for my trees. Once again that trunkline
