[Disqualified][Ninegrain] Ficus coronata

Post by Ninegrain »

• Species name- Ficus coronata
• Original height of stock- 50cm
• Where you obtained it from- Starter tree from Ray Nesci at the Central Coast Bonsai Society Annual Show
• Cost of stock- ~$4

This tree was purchased at last years show and was potted into this large concrete pot perhaps a month later. It has just been left to grow wild since then and fertilised heavily this season. I have reduce one of the trunks about a month ago only due to it starting to block the pathway in my small garden. The cut is shown in the 3rd picture and if this breaches the rules then please let me know and I will withdraw it. Future plans include a repot once work is allowed to commence to assess the nebari and to decide on the style and how to proceed with development then.

So it is probably a little late in the year for this but I bought a small green house on the weekend and as this is a local species and it and the ones I see around are still growing strongly I thought it was worth the risk so it could be settled by spring. That is I got brutal and chopped it all back to three short trunks and removed all but the framework nebari. It took about 2 hours to clear out the roots, as it was very rootbound, after quickly chopping the trunks back. I am happy with the roots at this stage but not sure on how to progress with the truck just yet so I plan to let it bud out and grow for a bit and hopefully by spring I will have a bit to choose from for the next stage of this trees development.

This was the tree on Saturday before I touched it..all bushy and hard to get a good picture of.

And after 2 hours clearing out the roots this was the result

A different angle

And potted up into a colander in a mix of Diatomite, Zeolite and potting mix in the ratio 50/25/25 respectively.
