Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
They are the easiest ever. Hard wood...soft wood...anything goes easily with them I wanted to make a hdge in the new plot I bought so grew from cuttings almost 100 of them...and kept on trying to make them bushy since a hedge needs to be bushy. Some of the roots escaped out of the packets into the ground, and I forgot to chop them (could not even reach the middle of the area where they were..) so they grew really fast some almost 3m high in year and half only. Just that I noticed the wooden branches are hard to bend and I suspect brittle.
I hope to make something out of it, and learn in the process...
I have nothing really suitable for bonsai...and need to grow the trunks on what I have. So this competition gives me an excellent excuse to torture my plants...before the trunks are grown much.
I joined this forum, last year when I was in Japan...bought a tiny bonsai (for the plant) there...and killed it before I reached home.
Later in the year October...a friend in SA infected me with the bonsai fiver...and since then I have been learning like 14 hours a day. Hope I will not embarrass my self.

The only way to do that, it to not compete.Neli wrote: Later in the year October...a friend in SA infected me with the bonsai fiver...and since then I have been learning like 14 hours a day. Hope I will not embarrass my self.

Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
Nice to hear these are easy to propagate, i will take some cuttings off the two out the back on the weekend when i get the time. Pesonally i think these sort of competitions are great, as i only joined ausbonsai at the end of last year i wasnt aware of the previous shohin comps but i have read through some of the posts there and have learned a great deal. I cannot wait to see how everyones trees progress
now to find something for myself to enter with and have a little fun experimenting with

He he he! I have the itch...to cut style and wire...but my plants are just too smal...So this is a good excuse to dig out the plants I planted for trunk development and enjoy my self.kcpoole wrote:The only way to do that, it to not compete.Neli wrote: Later in the year October...a friend in SA infected me with the bonsai fiver...and since then I have been learning like 14 hours a day. Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
Try to get bigger cuttings...smaller ones...Any size...stick them in a packet with river sand...and just water...I dont use rooting hormone...only for very rare and special things...but I manage to grow everything you can imagine...I am good with cuttings...Recently I stuck more than 15cm diameter bauhinia branch and it is growing...conifers...I grow them all...and to my surprise...3cm branches...hard wood of tuja stuck in the garden under a bush..are growing and back budding right to the soil level.KyBonzai wrote:Nice to hear these are easy to propagate, i will take some cuttings off the two out the back on the weekend when i get the time. Try experiment with huge...15-20cm trunk diameter branches...a bit longer than needed...like 80-100cm...You will be surprised how they will grow...
I not only cant wait to see other people's trees...but start chopping mine as well.

Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
I am still waiting for it to back bud after the trunk chop. Few microscopic shoots/buds...but not worth a photo yet.
Terrible reverse tapper...but I shall try to sort that out with curving at a letter stage.

Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
Greetings,
If you look on a Qld gov website, not sure which one, you will find this plant is a weed.
That is the reason they propagate so easily.
You are not allowed to do too much with them at all.
Please do not let them go to seed, the birds like the yellow berrys and new weeds grow all over the place.
Happy bonsai,
Bruce.

Re: [Neli] Duranta gold3
I am in Zambia...here everyone has them...but I have never seen them in the bush...They can not survive the dry season. So they are not a weed here.
