Hi all,
Update on this Chinese Elm. The elms have slowed right down. There wont be any real change until the warmer weather starts.

Re: [Ray M] Corky Bark Chinese Elm
A real noob question here...
But why plan it in a colander? I have seen this done a few times now.

Re: [Ray M] Corky Bark Chinese Elm
g'day Concept,
Good question.
Great drainage, and you can buy them quite cheap in dollar stores. I've also heard, when the roots get to the walls they die at the ends, which helps create finer roots coming off the root. I've got a few in plastic clothes washing baskets with large square holes all around them, but the roots are yet to get to the side walls yet. When they do,I will know for sure if that's fact or fiction.

Hi Concept and Woody,
Have a look at viewtopic.php?f=9&t=14986&hilit=colanders this will show you some of the things you can do with colanders. They are a great pot for growing your trees in to eventually create a bonsai. They drain very well.
Regards Ray

Re: [Ray M] Corky Bark Chinese Elm
G'day Ray,
thanks for the thread you had posted before. Great process you have.
If you plant in a colander or similar product, and grow not in the ground, is the theory of the root ends dying when they get to the holes (no medium for the rots to continue their growth), help feeder roots coming off that root valid
I remember reading it somewhere, not sure where though. I'm going to hunt through my boooks to see where I read it, of if I dreamt it

Hi Woody,
Yes, mate the roots will burn off if the colander is not in the ground. This is one way you can control the root ball without having to do much work.
Regards Ray

Hi Beano,
I only water once a day in summer. I use a hose to do my watering so they get a good soak. During winter I tend to keep my eye on them and water when I think they are getting dry.
Regards Ray

Hi all,
Update on this Elm. It's just starting to wake up. It should put on quite a bit of growth over the coming season.
Regards Ray

Hi everyone,
This is an update on the Elm. I have started to do some wiring now. Not a lot of growth at the moment compared to all my other Chinese Elms.
Regards Ray

Hi all,
Update on this Elm. I thought they were going to sleep. There were dead and browning leaves, and then we got some very nice rain. I haven't cut this one back so you can see the new growth.
Regards Ray

Hi all,
Update for this tree. The tree is very quite at the moment, there's very little happening. I have chosen a pot for the tree.
Regards Ray
