warning on chinese elm seed import?

Hello everyone, Just thought I'd give the newbies (like myself) and the uninformed (like myself) a warning that if you intend on importing Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) into Australia that the seeds will not pass through customs I just had a small batch of seeds delivered in early preperation and my Elm seeds did not get through.

My apoligies as I am sure that this topic has been covered on this great forum before but as being new to this space I thought a reminder to all may be apropriate?

How come you are trying to import Chinese Elm?
there are Millions of them here, and seeds should be readily available from the many street trees around.
Either that or take a cutting from an existing tree, or any Bonsai nursery shodu have plenty of starter or advanced stock

Hi Ken, I imported a whole host of tree seeds, some easier to come by then others. I didn't have enough stock of elms to take the number of cuttings I required (looks like the elms I have will be looking nuder then expected ) It's no big deal will just grow more of something else

This topic was just a warning to others.......don't bother importing seeds.....as ken mentioned find the other sources of material!

I have two large Chinese elms as garden specimens on my front lawn. I'm constantly pulling out seedlings. I can collect a bucket load for you, but would suggest that root cuttings make excellent material for bonsai and they are very easy to dig and most likely to strike.

Hi Brian, thanks for the lovely offer of some seedlings but I should be able to find them closer to home. However if you are happy or willing to dig and post them to me that would be great. Please be aware that, in Queensland at least, Celtis Sinensis or Hackberry is often referred to as Chinese Elm.
