Big collected Wisteria

Post by cre8ivbonsai »

Hi all, I've been eyeing this Wisteria off on a now vacant block for months, waiting for someone show up so I could do the right thing and ask permission to remove it. ;) That day came yesterday (a bit late in the season as it was in flower), but better late than nothing. So as soon as I got home out came the tools and the digging, cutting, sawing and pulling commenced ... The result is 28cm at the base and 84cm above the soil line (about 50cm below) ... removed all foliage/flowers, potted up in scoria and succulent mix, well watered in + Seasol and placed in a shady area, 8-) she now weighs in at approx 40kg  . I'm hoping for the best given the season, and any Wisteria after care tips are appreciated ...

Cheers,
Ryan

I'm super-jealous of that wisteria. Unfortunately I have nothing to contribute to this other than a plea for you to do a progression with this.

Welcome to the mad collectors club Ryan. And mad is the word. My limited experience with thie species is that you will need to be mindful of possible decay at places you have cut and do not re-shoot. Other than that, I would like a photo in a year or three when it is in full flower.
Good luck.

A good score C8. :tu: A couple of things..check straight away for borer as they plague this species. Cut out any rot now, you need to feel all over the tree for soft spots and clean it up. No problems with feeding them straight away.

Just gotta keep your eyes out and take opportunities when they arise :tu: , consider this as progression started ;)

Thanks Watto, already a bit mad  ;) it's been just qualified now :tu: I applied cut paste to all cut branches to try and avoid the major ones dying/drying all the way back to the trunk (as these seem to do naturally). Just aiming to keep it alive over the next 12 month, but yes, hopefully I can share photos of this beauty in full bloom in the years to come.

Thanks Bodhi, This one seems to be pretty strong and structurally sound, only one point of dieback/rot detected so far - (photo4) front bottom right dead branch back to base, though I'll do a more thorough check this weekend.

:?: At this stage should I be keeping the soil mix wet, or let it dry off a bit ... it is in full shade and staying reasonably moist, and still has a decent whack of the original soil around the roots (this is rich and sandy, and went very gluggy muddy when water was added when it was in the barrow), but there is 5cm of straight scoria a the bottom of the 'pot' to help drainage?

Thanks for the feedback,
Ryan

I would have bare rooted it straight away Ryan and put it in good draining soil. I would also start feeding it if it is shooting well and let it grow on. Start giving it some sun to.

Ok, done ... Washed off all the ground soil (mud) and changed the mix to the much more free draining mix (same as what I'm using for most of my other trees), also flat cut approx 4 inches off the base, as there was two very large (2 inch diameter) roots with no feeders, that would all need to be removed later on any way. It is now in a sunnier position and regular feeding will follow.

Cheers,
Ryan
