Collection after Bonsai by the Harbour

Post by kcpoole »

On the monday of the long weekend, I went on a collection / dig with Bretts at my usual spot and go a variety of trees to see how well they collect.

Got a Casuarina Raft that lifted straight off the old car park bitumen surface so hope it will do well.
A couple of Persoonia Liniarifolia - (Geebung) to mainly see how they go at collecting and how they recover. They did not have much root on them, So we will see, :?: as am hoping they can be like Melaleuca and recover with not much root.

Another couple of Kunzea made the tip home, though one was intended for Bretts I think :tounge: :lost:

A Melaleuca that was already dug out of the ground by Council :o  :? and a Privet also dug by them

The local council have been doing works thru bush nearby, putting in a cycle way along the creek, and have gone thru and graded bul dozed heaps of trees and stump into little piles of Rubbish.
In one pile ( only done a few days before) I found a Privet that had been Flat cut about 4 inches up the trunk, but had a Very flat root mass with Lovely Radial Roots !!!
Amazing and I doubt anyone could grow roots like that without trying real hard over several years! I did not really want a Privet, but this one was too good to refuse!

When i got home I spent about 3 hrs potting them up while standing under anUmbrella in the pouring rain  :palm: :palm:

Hope they all Recover :-)

The other thing I collected was this battered up Whellbarrow!
It was on the council rubbish pile, and looked like someone tried to Run over it and then burn it !
As we had quite a way back to the car. It was piled up with the goodies and then came home too

That wheelbarrow looks like a true collectors item :palm: . I cannot judge though we have 4 wheelbarrows currently in use around the yard and they all came from the tip :tu: .
Nice collected stock as well, but it was the wheelbarrow that really caught my eye.

thanks
Brett got a large Crepe Myrtle, Casuarina, Mel, and Kunzea.

I have no idea of the Persoonia either, and no one else i have talked to either :lost: so maybe I and pioneer :tu:
I collected a Kunzea from the same location a month ago, and it is throwing out shoots all over so maybe they will be good :fc:
they have tiny foliage and if they collect well then they will be cracker to have and work with I think.

I'm interested to see how well the Kunzea goes with collecting.

My parents have 20ha of a white flowering Kunzea that range from tiny to leg thick, so if they accept collecting well, a dig might be on :?:

I collected one about a month ago and it has already started shooting new buds.
It was growing on a flat rock shelf so the roots were a big flat pankacke and just lifted with a shovel almost intact. It is potted in a flat tray and I did not cut much root at all so have high hopes. :fc:
these 2 also had a lot of root as well so all looks good

give them a go and see how you do

Going thru some old posts looking for a particular tree I collected, I found this one and thought I will post an update on the progress of the trees

The Persoonia did not survive at all, although too ages to die off completely.
The Kunzea all survived collection mostly although they did dies back quite a lot. unfortunately I think i was too hard on 2 of them and maybe took too much root off :-(, in the repotting this year and both the larger ones have both died :x

The privet is going strong and thriving along with the crepe Myrtle I collected as well.

Lots of people complain that privet gets die back of the trunk if trunk chopped hard and no shoots/branches bellow the cut. Did you experience that since I saw you cut them back hard?
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

No the privet had no problem with dieback.
the trunk was only about 8 inches or so tall when I found it, and had no branches at all. I have only trimmed the cut once it had reshot and started to develop.
