Will Old Crepe Mertyls bud from hard wood?

Post by emi93m »

Hi Guys I have the opportunity to dig up a very old multi trunk Crepe Mertyl. The tree is almost 4m TALL so obviosly a massive trunk chop is required but my question is will it back bud from hard wood as i dont want to do all that hard work for nothing?

Thanks in advance!

Hmmmm Sydney? Should be totally bare by now unless you live right on the coast. Yes it should be ok. OK do what you have to . I would probably dust the larger cut roots with Mancozeb plus or a sulphur powder to avoid fungal infection. Pot it up or plant in another spot in the ground and wait. They are pretty tough things especially when dormant. Good luck. :fc:

I collected some about 3 weeks ago in Sydney, and will be doing some more soon. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11636&p=122729&hilit=crepe#p122729

A little early, but as they are already deciduous around here then all should be fine to collect now.

Get as much root as you can, and try not to let the tree stay wet all thru winter.
Yes they will backbud onto old wood readily.

Agreed, and mine came back strong from a trunk chop and it also was an old tree.
