Very Simple rules I like it

Stock

Although there is no limit on [price] stock used, the creative process from the original stock is one of the judging aspects so the use of raw stock or collected stock is strongly recommended rather than pre-Bonsai stock.
All styling work must be your own; workshop trees will be disqualified. Soliciting and/or receiving advice from others will be cause for disqualification. Sorry, no virtuals are allowed.

All work must be done on the stock within the time frame allotted in the contest rules. Work done before the contest start date will disqualify the entrant. Photos of work done on a bonsai prior to the contest dates will be disqualified.

This is an online bonsai comp with some serious prizes

This is very interesting Brett, i wonder if any Aussies will be entering. It would be a great lift for the Australian Bonsai scene if an Aussie native placed well The thought of going against some awesome European collected tree or artist is fairly daunting no doubt however it intrigues me. I currently have 3 collected Melaleucas that would rival even Pup's collected stock . The short competition time from only june 2012 to January 2013 is short and i wonder if a Melaleuca would be accepted as stock, it says any stock but i saw something about conifers or deciduous tree. mmmm nothing ventured nothing gained

That's a good question Craig, It does not say the stock must be conifer or deciduous but they are the only prize catagories. Hope it is just an oversite as I wanted to enter my big collected lilly pilly. That could grow fast if I get it right

From what I have seen you can get those Melaleucas cranking so they would also be a great option.

I have asked the question to Paul it will be interesting what he gets back with

Thats interesting, where will they put Callitris? it is in the Cupressaceae family. It is an Australian native.

Although I doubt it will be used.

Yes at first I thought Great Paul is not excluding any species from the prizes and if he wants to put tropicals in with deciduous then so be it. But then I thought a little harder although it may be fair to call a lilly pilly tropical many other of our natives like bottle brush may not fit the tropical as well.
I would have thought Paul could have thought of non-coniferous a little more than just tropical. I wonder where the Casuarina will go. Maybe with the conifer yet one of it's closests relative is the hornbeam.

I don't think it is a big deal, the main thing to me is that no stock is excluded and I guess Paul will just put them into whichever he sees best but I thought it might be fun to ask a couple more questions prying into what they know about our natives and how they will deal with what seems to be a big oversight to me.

I don't really see that only having 2 categories is a problem. I would say the Mels and Casas would fit into the Conifer cat- especially with deadwood, shari and jins.Same for callitris. If you go into it openminded and submit an entry that is worthy of the comp, taking into account what stock is likely to emerge from Europe and the likes, i don't think it matters what category a tree is in.

I think they think of the Casuarina as a tropical tree as it is popular in the tropics. Hence I think they would put it in the deciduous section. I reckon the Mela's would end up the same.
It sounds like as Pup suggests Conifers and then everything else goes in deciduous.
Callitris should find it's way into the coniferous section through as that's what it is.

It will be interesting to see where Paul puts them
