Juniperus advice

Good morning Guys,

I am after some advice/input on styling the following plants, juniperus holger ( first 4 pics) and juniperus prostrata ( last 3 pics).
I am thinking cacsade for the holger and maybe semi cascade for the prostrata.
I have no experiences with junipers, when is the best time to repot and root prune
suggested pot colours?
trunk thickness is about 10mm at the base....should i just grow these on? tho I am happy with the size these plants are already
any advice greatly appreciated and a virt or two will make my day

Hi B.M, juni's can be repotted any time in Spring, probably mid is best. With the prostrata a semi cascade is best. Should be doing all your trunk line and secondary's now. Once you have established your main branching you can then start pinching back your foliage to get some back budding for your tertiary branching. Here is something, stylewise, you can consider. Full sun is best and water, feed every day this time of year.

Hi Banksaiman , Bodhi has given the best advice . I might add if you want to thicken the trunks , don't root prune do a "simple slip potting" the topic is posted here .pot up into a bigger pot not down into a bonsai pot if you want to establish a trunk line and foliage pads . You need to follow the advice Bodhi has given , don't worry about types of pot yet as they are basically pot plants not yet trainers until you do some work on them . Movement can be obtained by wiring the trunk or utilizing a dowel or piece of bamboo and rotate or wind the trunk around it , however you wont get the cascade movement you seek until later on with the dowel method however the trunk will be set in a season . You can make a trainer in an hour , but you wont make a bonsai in a day .

When you say 'feed everyday...' - do you mean when you water do it with a liquid fertiziler such as CC or seasol or the like? Just not sure of this element of your advice.

Hi Stew, you have two options, firstly, yes, if you are liquid fertilising you should feed the tree daily, or, every second day.If you are solid fertilising there should be enough lying on top of the tree to give it a good feed when you water. You can put solid fertiliser in a little plastic holding cage and distribute them around the tree so it feeds every water. I just lay it around the pot but if the tree is set high i use the little cage. SEASOL is not a fertiliser but a root tonic and should be applied on a weekly basis. Just add it to your fertiliser. Hope this helps.

Is it only Juni's that can tolerate being fed this regularly? And does it depend on what substrate/soil mix you have them in? I feed my trees every Sunday, and occasionally on a Wed or Thurs in peak growing season. Most of my trees are now in Diatomite/zeolite/pine bark minis, but some are still in a standard potting mix. I would have thought that chemical fertilisers would build up in the more traditional potting mixes and burn the roots? What do others think? Can maples and other deciduous trees tolerate this much food?

Most of the Fert will leach out anyway, and many people advocate ferting everyday.
I put Organic solid fert on my trees, so they get fertiliser every time I water. I add Liquid every weekend or 2.
