different types of nodes on trees ?

Hi all

I have always wondered about inter-nodes on Japanese maples and how they differ from other trees like the chinese elm .
The Japanese maple only grows branches/leaves from the area on the trunk/branch that has the visible band around it, were the chinese elm has no visible
band and just seems to sprout from anywhere is this true? is there a proper name for these different types of characteristics on trees?

I have heard with say Trident maple that it will only bud from where a node was previously but then once the trunk/branch gets over a certain thickness then it may bud from anywhere.

A swampy I got a couple of years back had a trunk maybe 50mm or more but on close inspection it seemed that there was some distance on the trunk that would have no nodes and wondered if I could ever get it to bud where I wanted. I have since given up and started to use thread grafts.
I envision this tree to be my frankenstein with a never ending quest to increase the amount of branches it has
I would love to hear some more info on this
