Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
They look really nice Luke308, well done!
Did you collect the Callitris seed yourself?
I have around 50 or so Casaurina seeds that I collected that have sprouted and are at the same stage as the ones in your last pic.
I sprouted mine in the same container and was wondering at what stage I should pot them up individually?
Cheers, Dario.

Good work
one of the joys of being young is we can grow from seed and still be around to see them mature into decent specimens

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
No I bought all my seeds from ebay, I had big issues with one seller from WA, and wouldn't use them again. I have however had great success with http://stores.ebay.com.au/Australiana-P ... 4340.l2563 but it looks like they are out of action until after XMAS. I have bought Port Jackson figs, trident maple, amur maple, Japanese maple seeds, and all sorts of great species suitable for bonsai.Dario wrote:They look really nice Luke308, well done!

As for when to pot them individually, I have no experience with these myself, so I cant help you with that one. I'm guessing when the are at least 2 inches tall?
Hope this helps

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
Hi Luke and thanks for your info on where to source the seeds and re potting up the cas into individual pots...have you individually potted your casuarinas that sprouted in the same container yet? The stems seem so fragile even though they are around 8 to 10cm's tall, and I don't want to kill them.
Can anyone else who has this experience varify Luke's response as it makes sense and is done with other species of seedlings when at this stage?
Cheers, Dario

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
once you see roots emerge from the bottom they should be fine to repot, you dont want to leave them too long. Very gently remove them from the compost, take as much soil and roots as possible, pot up and keep well watered for the first week or 2 then start hardening them off

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
I dont like to name and shame, but it is the same person craig recommended http://stores.ebay.com.au/Australian-SeedHornet wrote:mind sharing the WA seller luke?
I was told my package was sent via courier, and that she had the tracking number. she would not give me the tracking number, and gave me the run around making excuses for 2 weeks. Finally she reposted the item, which she told me she had included proof of original package being sent. I received the second package, but without said "proof". To her credit she did put in some extra seeds as a bonus. postage should be up-to 5 business days from WA to SA, but it took 16 days to receive!!I still never received the first package

I have since bought seed from http://stores.ebay.com.au/Australiana-P ... 4340.l2563 on 3 occasions, and had no dramas at all.
If you dont mind waiting, and don't communicate with the WA supplier I'm sure you would have no dramas

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
you should be fine mate, I think by the sounds of it she was ill at the time. She was kind enough to refund my money which I wouldn't have asked for in a million years. Just don't message her asking where your seeds are after 10 business days

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
Cas seeds are pretty easy to collect, just grab the seedpods when they are starting to open, spring/summer. Think I have some verticellata around or can fairly easily grab them if anyone wants. I usually separate them about 2 inches high, yep they are delicate but the sooner separated the easier it will be. Dont rush and be gentle. I then put 3-4 into a three inch pot so the roots grow separately, leave them there until more like 5-6 inches, then separate pots.
If you are not killing plants, then you are not extending yourself as a gardener..

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
Thanks Greth for all the info re potting on cas seedlings!
Bit the bullet and did it at the start of December and haven't lost one as of yet.
Felt silly asking but first time with this species and they seemed so thin and piddly compared with other seedling species I have worked with.
Cheers, Dario.

Re: NEW BEGINNINGS (various)
Just a quick update. I only have the one callitris left as the other 2 didn't take kindly to having the tap root severed but this one didn't mind. The casuarinas are doing well, some better than others, but most are looking similar to this atm. I have plaited a few together and twisted some into knots just out of curiosity as I have so many of the things.
