Small Juniper's new style

Post by Magzy »

Had a very small ugly stick in pot squamata taking up space so decided to try and do something with it. Found a piece of gold vine that i never used for a fish tank and went with a Tanuki style. Good excuse to get the dremel out again and have a play, carved detail into them and used the smaller one of the two for the juniper.Treated the Tanuki with lime sulphur and let it grow and pinched it when needed. Had a look at it again today and decided to take a photo of it, still got a long way to go and i'm hope to do it as a cascade. There is the start of an apex in there and once i get the tail moving down i will probablly shorten the long dead piece. Its still got a lot of growing to do but at least it looks a bit better than what it did. No photo of the juniper before but i think i have on a card somewhere.

Epic Tanuki, that looks so much better than in a planted tank.

Did you use grafting wax???

Thanks for the comments guys, i haven't used graft wax as not all of the branch has been shaped into its groove yet, i felt it was about to snap when first styled. The good thing about tanuki is how quick the look of a tree can change with a good piece of wood, maybe not everyones taste but each to their own. Thanks again for having a look and that other piece may be used for another one day.

G'day mate, not much to update on this one. I thought the tail was going to be hard to get as i have read it is easier to create one with a branch than grow one but this one is growing quite well. Only problem is this is where all its energy is going and none to the apex branch. Good luck with yours and the best advise i can give is in the piece of wood to use, go for the most craziest piece you can find because if its plain and boring it wont work and a waste of time to grow something on it. In my opinion the driftwood is the piece of art in Tanuki and the tree is grown to complement it and give the illusion it is all one.

Found a crazy piece of gold vine for 10 bux at a local aquarium and i have a squamata picked out, all i need is:

Router bit for my rotary tool.
Grafting wax.
And a decent pot, i was going to use an un stained earth coloured oval pot about 50-60mm deep.

Ill be sure to post pics when i start. :)
