Now I am confused Aaron I thought Pup meant he came accross the Hawthorns on his recent travels in the UK. Dam he gets me all the time.

After all the repotting around the house I have found my second wind and when I noticed the last collected Hawth was starting to shoot I thought I better have one more go. The trees I had planned where not any good. I must have gotten over excited about finding some with movement as they had that but nothing else. The place is littered with Hawthorn so I was not wasting my $30 fuel. After a scrounge around I found these two.
I picked this one out first It should make a nice shohin one day. After considering asking one of the farms if I could dig one of the ones on their fence line(which is probably where all the wild ones came from) I came across the last on my list which was one of the many straight ones. It had some low branches and was close to the car. I was lucky to find a pretty decent root spread. After reading some articles about Hawthorn On Harry Harringtons site I think one like this is worth Experimenting with.

Not a hawthorn but I thought this firethorn was worth a try to make the trip worthwhile.

great trip bretts! they are all great. i love the larger hawthorn. it might be straight but oozing character with some great options for leaders. the nebari, flair and muscle up the trunk, well what can i say, you are home and ho. congrats. oh btw its oak and elm time next

hey bretts, nice hawthorns, but i love the firethorn trunk best of all. firethorns are very hard to find with taper & movement. great concept with the carry baskets too. congrats on a successful dig day, i don't think you wasted the trip. cheers, dave.

hey hows this for a hawthorn. this one is located in Wales. lucky for it.

i've got a cousin in wales, maybe if we tell him where it is he can dig it for us & smuggle it over. LOL.

It should be fun carving the bigger hawth in a year or so. There are some great leaders to choose from. If I get creative with the carving it might even be presentable while it heals.
That's a great Picture Antonio. I wish the farmers had clipped the hawthorns on their fence line as the years went here, as they would be amazing by now. Although these are on the outside of their fence they where obviously planted as a wind break many years ago so I will have to ask if I can get a couple next year.
It is hard to find firethorn or cotoneaster here that is not in a clump and they have little movement. But when you do find the single trunk ones it seems they all have some movement similar to this one.
Here is the one I got heading into winter as a collecting experiment. Not thriving but surviving

Edit: Oh the shopping baskets where from a closed down shop they where given to me. I should have got more but Danica was very unhappy that I was going to spread them all over the yard reminding her of the place

Hi fella's , can i enter mine. I collected it this about an hour ago on a short walk .It took 10 minutes to dig ,it has a 100mm base ,spread from tip to toe is 2400mm and stands 550mm high .Ooops i will have to disqualify myself as mother nature , Bambi and Skippy have been trimming this instant Bonsai for decades . I estimate this beauty to be around 35 year mark , i could be wrong but i will search for a dead tree of similar size and do a ring count .Cheers and happy Bonsai hunting
