If it is a "dwarf english elm" I hope it is not the variety "Jaqueline Hillier".

Ulmus procera "Jaqueline Hillier"is a shocker!

It fits in the category of "bring me a tree and make it snappy"

The late Ron Anderesen, had some called Ulmus davidiana, a Japanese cork bark elm he imported when we could.
In Jennifer Wilkinson's book, Bonsai art and technique, there are some photographs .

The leaves are naturally small and the bark is corky, but not as much as Suburosa or Seiju.

There is also another dwarf cultivar called Catlin it is an American witches broom.
It was again imported when we could. all of these have naturally occurring small leaves. I have never defoliated my elms and all have reduced.

I understand that Ron never sold any of the cuttings he struck but any one who asked got some though the mail.
He was a very generous man, and a wonderful Bonsai teacher. He is sorely missed.

thanks pup, just threw a spanner in the works

it has a little bit of roughness to the trunk but overall it is quite smooth, grey bark, which led me to think it was english elm or zelcova. a dwarf variety of either of them would be more of a possibility.

i still need to get a pic of the trunk for you all but i am a little bit peeved with it right now as i found a section of the trunk has died off

Noticed a dwarf elm thjat was mentioned at Ray's. Looks like the same to me even had a little bit of varigation in it like yours Jamie. Did not get a chance to ask the botanical name. You could get that with a phone call though.

i think it is a drawf english elm brett, botanic name would be ulmus procera and whatever cultivar it is, the one i have only has tiny leaves like i said and the varigation is minimal at most but what is there it is a little spotty, not like a edge varigation.

just a little update, no pics as such as i am having trouble moving today with my dicky back but last night when i could i checked the layer which is going strong but noticed something on all the new growth it has thrown which is a lot and it is strong, that i think brett might have hit the nail on the head with it being a spring? varigation, there is a lot of little white spots all through the leaf, no varigation around the edge of the tree just spotty, it is not a disease or pest either as there would be some form of symptom i beleive and nothing has shown.

brett, can you post a pic of that spring varigated elm you have? thanks.

thanks for the link, i cant see the leaves to make a comparison to mine but the trunk has a very similar appearance to that one. very interested. do you have botanical name for that? it was probably in that link but i just scan read it looking more at the pics then reading.
