Nice work Peter!

I'd like to share some Autumn colour too, but most of my trees are a delightful shade of scorched.

Thanks.

Fly.

Very Nice Peter a very balanced setting.
is there any ways to induce autumn colors?
The general idea is to increase sun exposure and also exposure to the cold nigthts as winter aproaches.
The healthier the tree and the colder the nights the better the colour.

Defoliation during the summer season should help give better color and intact, unburnt leaves as well.

I had considerd defoliating a couple of my deciduous this year but was unsure exactly when. I did not want to do it to early in the summer heat but then felt it was a little late for them to harden off. It seems that once it cools down enough there is not enough of the season left? What time would be suggested to defoliate.

In Canberra I defoliated Japanese Maple , Ash and Trident Maple.

Trident Maple 02 Dec 2008

Japanese Maple 12 Dec 2008

Desert Ash 27 Nov 2008 and 31 Dec 2008 and again Feb 2009.

All repsonded very quickly and cameback with full sets of new leaves and survived the 4 x 40 degree days in a row with a little shade for the Japanese Maple.

The Ash that I defoliated 3 times in Canberra from November onwards was brought to Canberra on 28th September and had already been defoliated 3 times by its owner at Hay. It is very hot in Hay and the season starts very early so this particular Ash was defoliated SIX TIMES in one year but that is an unusual year of course.

One of my own Ash was defoliated three times but later into the season with the last defoliation in early March. They are very tough and vigorous plants.
