eucalyptus bark shedding

Post by PaulC »

Hi everyone,

I have had some time to spare, (finally !), and whilst moving plants here an there to accommodate the change of season,
I redisovered one of my natives, (I have six, three from the raffle table....no disrespect to the native loving folk, after all this is MY collection ), and then suddenly realised why I have these specimens.

To be honest, none of my natives are in bonsai pots, as I feel they do not conform to any `true` bonsai style, and so keep them in training pots ` for my eyes only`, so to speak..........though I have taken three of them to a club meeting about six months ago for a native talk.

The thing I love about two of my natives is this; two are Eucalyptus.

Plain and simple.

I live in the Blue Mountains NSW and I am not ony fortunate enough to see introduced trees growing nearby,( and at this time of year the colour that Autumn brings), but of course I am surrounded by native bushalnd.

I have never attempted any formal training on these Eucalyptus, but just have kept them in tight confine in regards to feeding and planting, with the occasional trim and prune where warranted, (though the heat over this last summer took care of most of that for me, but thats another story).

They have been in and out of nursery pots for at least 13 years (if my memory is correct).

My question is, (after much rambling), does anyone out there also have Eucalyptus as bonsai or in bosani form ?

And if so, mine is shedding bark....again!!

It looks sensational !! ....Are yours shedding bark as well ?

I do not know the species of my trees, but I do love the way I can look at my specimen, at about 3 foot tall pot level to tip
(sorry folks I know its 2011 and I should know metrics, but ....!! a metre ??), and then look over my balcony to what seems to be the same species, which stands proud at what I can only gauge at over at least 100 foot tall, and it is shedding its bark as well !!

Any thoughts ?

I am only too happy to post some pics if anyone is interested.

As an aside I was in Canberra about two weeks ago and saw the smooth barked apple or Sydney Red Gum ( Angophora Costata ), at the National Bonsai and Penjing Colletion of Australia and it was begining to shed it`s bark as well.

A great specimen, standing about 1.5-2mtrs ?

Makes my stick Eucalyptus look just like the stick it is, by comparison !!

I have a pic of this tree as well, but will refrain from posting at this moment.

Perhaps Grant Bowie may have a better pic than my happy snap, or links to this tree from the NBPCA website ?

Though Im sure by now Grant is well on his way preparing to go to, or on his way to Perth for the AABC Convention ?

Perhaps on his return, he may be able to share pics of the smooth barked apple, as well as the many othyer native bonsai dispayed at the Perth Show ?

Best wishes to you Grant, and those who travell with you en route to Petrh, I hope it is everything you desire.

I look forward to any thoughts on bark shedding on natives.

regards,

Paul.

Hi everyone, it has been only moments since I posted that I rearranged my collection, and after sitting down feeling good about it all, I hear a `CRASH`

Possums how I loathe these creatures.

They seem to eat ANYTHING!!

I have lost tops of trees ( bonsai), though feeding as well as curiousity.

Now suddenly, just as I turned of the lights...........CRASH!!

I lost a 10 year old juniper in a 30 year old pot over my balcony...........

The possum is safe......for now !!

For someone thats loves nature, im not a fan of this little teasure at all !!

And by `little` I mean a butt ugly large possum !!

Any remedy that isnt illegall, nor in humane ?

PS...goes for the bush rats as well.........one in............all in.

Thanks,

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul
I have 4 Eucalypts ( have no ide of varitey, but none in Bonsai pots yet.)
the 2 biggest are both are shedding bark now, but my garden trees have all finished, and the smaller ones in pots are too immature as they are self sown in the garden last year

Gday Paul & KC!

PeterH has a great thread showing his Eucs shedding their bark. I've tried to find more using the search function, but for some reason it wants to ignore the word "bark"... :lost:

Enjoy!
