Grafting mature stock

G'day.

I bought this white pine about a year ago . (I'd upload a photo but my camera got wet and I need a new 1, photo coming soon) It's about 2 foot tall, nicely grafted onto a nice fat black pine stump. The white pine trunk has a thickness of a 10 cent piece, maybe slightly thinner, it has a sacrifice branch coming off it (new leader) which I want to train in cascade/semi-cascade style. Now here comes the question, can I chop the leader and graft it onto an existing black pine? The black pine has a stump of a 50 cent piece. I'd graft it good, use cut paste and screws, then seal it. Would it survive ? It would be 80% of the tree that im chopping off. If this would not work i'd just air layer it I guess ? And plan C would be to chop it to pieces and graft it onto several black pines, red pines and mikawa's. I have 6 2 year old and 10+ 3-4 year old JBP's ready to roll. BTW I wouldn't even dare to chop it now, but just planning ahead for spring.

Sounds like you have put plenty of thought into it. Sounds probable but really need to see the pics to get a better idea. Call me chicken but I would not commit an opinion without seeing the specimens.

Went and picked up a new camera this morning. Samsung ES30 12.2 MP $86 @ Dick Smiths.

This is the white pine. After bringing it inside and sitting with it for abit over lunch, im now not so sure of semi cascade and keeping the existing leader and chopping the sacrifice branch.

And some pics of JBP's to turn into JWP's. The one in the foam box is the same thickness as the JWP leader, slightly fatter. Would this work with a graft ? What would you do to it ?

Ideas and suggestions would be great.

That tree is a beauty. Well I guess im half way there with the roots, im thinking more and more about cutting that branch on the left and bending the right one around, after abit of inspiration, now I think it would look good as an informal upright.

Should I cut it this year or wait another year or more to fatten it ? It's just the size of the cuts gonna get bigger every year.

I might give it abit of wire soon, im thinking of wrapping bike tube around the trunk . will this affect the part where there is no foilage ? I ask because I plan to graft afew branches on that naked section. Does wrapping your tree stop new shoots from growing after you take the rubber off ?
