Penny, mudlarkpottery wrote:Hi Ketoi. Do you have trouble with the porosity of the clay with an EW firing and the bonsai pots being constantly moist? How does the terrasig react to being moist over a long period of time?
Penny.
As you know terracotta is very porous, when terra sig is applied it acts as a sealer. On the 1st test pot I just coated the outside, out of curiosity I submerged the pot in a bucket of water. It held moisture longer than raw terracotta but nothing to be a concern. 2nd pot both inside and out were coated, the pot repealed water like vitrified stoneware. As long as stoneware is vitrified terra sig made no difference to moisture holding capabilities.

An attempt at a faceted bowl

These are made from scraps after slab building, I use them for testing glazes on different clay bodies before applying to the final pot

Re: My pots
I thought the glaze was distracting ending in a ring around the middle of the pot

So I redipped it in the glaze and fired again. Doesn't draw your eye to the center of the pot now.

Re: My pots
Hi Ketoi. I was wondering about the long-term effects of moisture on terrasig as I made a pot and after a few years of being out in the open, the finish started to flake off. I love the green glaze with the crystals along the thick roll and what is that little tree?
Penny.

Re: My pots
Penny,
Did you apply terra sig to bone dry or bisqued wares? If you did the latter it will flake with exposure to the elements and time.
The green glaze is not supposed to look like that, it's a plain matte green. I tried slow cooling to see how it would effect a commercial glaze.
The small tree is actually a succulent, Avonia ustulata

Re: My pots
After reading a few threads regarding cracked pots I thought I give it a try.
1st attempt, started to collapse but I kept pushing to see what would happen

2nd try, little better

3rd, starting to get in the hang of it

4th, a little wobblier

5th, my favorite

I've made 3 or 4 stretched pots before so it wasn't totally foreign experience to me.
