It is most likely a seed pod from a Liquidamber or Plain Tree(Platanus).

It will need to dry out first and then the seed will come out.

Not a Maple, but liquidambar

Easy to grow from seed too but this is just the pod
after they mature they will open and the seeds will fall out to be spread by the wind

Sean,

After being in canberra over the weekend, there is a treasure trove of seed to be had soon, there are so many great variety of trees in fruit or berry !!

Grant is correct, it would be from a Liquid Amber, and as you say you took it from the tree, which will give you a better overall idea of the tree, esp since the `fuit` is still green.

I would suggest drying it in a paper bag, as when it drys out and begins to open, the seed will collect in the bag, and allow for its collection a lot more easily than just having it sitting about somewhere.

Oh, and by the way, there will be LOTS of seed, not just one large on in it, like a avacado or mango or lychee !!

Sow them across some seed raising mix after the have dried out, cover lighlty, water, and wait.

They are usually quite easy to strike.

Have fun, and take a look about for anything else that takes your eye, the red berries along Northbourne Avenue in Civic looked good..............I collected quite a nice bag full !!!
