Gday everyone,
Have a couple of Japanese Larch that I am planning on repotting this winter. I'm just wondering whether or not it is safe to bare root them during repotting.

I would like an answer also, cause I bought a Japanese larch from a nursery and would like to attach it to a piece of driftwood this winter.

Repotting often is considered a good habit for larch bonsai. They do not like to be root bound and will show sign of distress when they are root/pot bound. Repotting should be done in early spring before the buds open.

Less fertilizer will reduce the growth rate which is good for trees we want to keep to a bonsai-like size.

Wiring should be done in late summer as an early wiring will kill the fragile cambium.

Pruning should be done in late summer but always leave 2-3 buds on a branch to prevent die back. To preserve style, simply pinch new shoots.

hey webo's in ireland they do it like this
It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun - combines well with Scots pine and birch. Keep out of strong winds and very exposed sites. Suitable for small mixed woodlands. The wood makes an excellent timber for decks and fences. Final height is 30 - 40 m. Medium: 9 - 10 litre container / half standard size. Bare root plants 40-60 cms. November to March only.

so all you need to do is work out what season it is in them months and you should be sweet

i just checked and that is winter in irland so i would think it would be ok to bare root in winter here

G'day Webos.

I picked up a larch in January, took it home and gave it a prune, I took about half the foilage and branches off it and now I have maybe 10% left. It didn't like the prune at all ! I learnt not to work them too hard. I'd throw up a pic but im pretty shamed out

They love it !!! Wont even bat an eyelid! Anytime during dormancy to just as the bud begins to open. The latter being safer. I have had one for 5 yrs now and given it everything i can throw at it!!!
